BoSox hire scout who tried to get Tom Brady to sign with Expos
BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox have hired Gary Hughes, a longtime scout who tried to sign New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady out of high school to play baseball.
Hughes, 70, will work with the team as a professional scouting consultant. He spent the last nine seasons with the Chicago Cubs.
Hughes was working with the Montreal Expos in 1995 when they drafted Brady in the 18th round. According to the book Tom Brady: Unlikely Champion, Hughes said Brady would have gone higher if he hadn't been expected to play football.
Brady did not sign with the Expos and played football at Michigan.
