Camp, Kuo added to bullpen
--RHP Shawn Camp signed a one-year contract after having pitched in 67 games with Toronto last year. Camp, 36, was 6-3 with a 4.21 ERA for the Blue Jays and ranked in the top 15 in among American League relievers in inducing ground balls.
--LHP Hong-Chih Kuo signed a one-year contract after appearing in 40 games last season for the Los Angeles Dodgers, a number kept low due to trips to the DL because of back pain and anxiety issues. Kuo, 30, was an All-Star for the Dodgers in 2010 while saving 12 games in 13 chances and posting an ERA of 1.20. The 2011 season was miserable for him, however, as he went 1-2 with a 9.00 ERA.
--C Chris Gimenez was designated for assignment to open up space on the roster. It's likely the Mariners will attempt to sign Gimenez to a minor league deal in the coming days.
--OF Mike Wilson was designated for assignment to open up space on the roster. It's possible Wilson may return to the Mariners during spring training. To do that, Seattle must work out a minor league deal with him if he does not sign elsewhere.
--LHP Danny Hultzen made a $100,000 commitment to the baseball program at his alma mater, the University of Virginia, to help with improvements to the school's home, Davenport Field. No. 2 draft pick Hultzen was 32-5 with a 2.08 ERA in 51 games (50 starts) for the Cavaliers and holds the Virginia record for wins (32) and strikeouts (395).
--C Christian Carmichael, a minor leaguer with the organization, was slapped with a 50-game suspension after having tested positive for a PED (performance-enhancing substance). Carmichael, 19, was the club's sixth-round pick in 2010 and played 11 games in the Arizona Fall League in 2010 and another five last year. The Office of the Commissioner said in announcing the suspension that Carmichael had tested positive for Methylhexanemine.
BY THE NUMBERS
