--1B Brett Pill is taking grounders at third base. There's no obvious choice for a backup third baseman, and Pill, a first baseman by trade who could provide right-handed pop off the bench, is trying to make himself more versatile. He played some second base in the minors last year. Other possibilities for third base are Mike Fontenot, Emmanuel Burriss and Ryan Theriot.
--RHP Tim Lincecum joined the Twitter world, and he congratulated the U.S. soccer team in his first tweet: "@clint_dempsey @ussoccer just want to say congrats to you and the team on a great job and making the US proud, so pumped for you guys." Midfielder Clint Dempsey's goal lifted the U.S. past Italy, 1-0. Within hours, Lincecum had more than 20,000 followers.
--C Buster Posey is destined for a one-year contract, not a multiyear deal, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. He earned $575,000 last year and missed most of the season because of leg and ankle injuries, and he has yet to play a full season. In his Rookie of the Year campaign in 2010, he arrived in May. As a Super Two player, Posey is eligible for arbitration after this season.
--INF Emmanuel Burriss, who is out of options, is vying for a utility role on the Giants' 25-man roster. Other backup infielders include Mike Fontenot and Ryan Theriot, though projected starters SS Brandon Crawford and 2B Freddy Sanchez aren't guarantees because of Crawford's offensive problems and Sanchez's injury problems. So Burriss is valuable to have around, especially because he's a switch-hitter with speed.
--Cs Chris Stewart and Eli Whiteside are competing for the No. 2 job behind C Buster Posey. Stewart had a better defensive year in 2011, but Whiteside was dogged by a bum elbow that he says is now fine. C Hector Sanchez, probably a better hitter than Stewart and Whiteside, is targeted to start at Triple-A Fresno.
BY THE NUMBERS
78 -- Strikeouts recorded by reliever Heath Hembree in 58 1/3 innings with two farm teams last year, Class A San Jose and Class AA Richmond. Hembree is a longshot to make the opening day roster but would be considered as an injury replacement.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"Spring training is all about being ready for the opener of the regular season. If I wasn't ready for that, I'd be disappointed." -- C Buster Posey, who will be eased into exhibition games after leg and ankle injuries cost him most of last season.
