--Kirk Gibson accepted his 2011 NL Manager of the Year plaque before the regular-season opener Friday with no small measure of humility while remembering the word of mentor and former Detroit manager Sparky Anderson. "Players make the manager; it's never the other way around," Gibson said, quoting Anderson when speaking about the award. "There is a screwed-up mechanism in my mind that feels like when I stand up and individually accept an award, it takes something away from my team, which I would never want to do." Gibson said he would not display the award, and he plans eventually to sell it and use the proceeds to fund the Kirk Gibson Foundation, which provides scholarships for high school students to attend his alma mater, Michigan State.
--RHP Daniel Hudson is off to a good start in defense of his 2011 Silver Slugger award. Hudson singled to right field in his first two at-bats of the season Saturday, hitting a looper down the right field line in the second inning and a sharp grounder to right in the fourth. The second was struck so well that Giants' right fielder Melky Cabrera tried to throw Hudson out at first, although the play was not close. "I'm just glad I didn't pull my 'hammy' or something," Hudson said with a smile.
--The D-backs' 3-0 start ties a franchise record set by Buck Showalter's 2000 team, which swept a three-game series against Philadelphia to open the season before losing to Pittsburgh. The D-backs opened that season 6-1 and 12-4 but did not make the playoffs.
--RHP Josh Collmenter's spring training struggles (9.95 ERA in 19 innings) bled into the regular season when he gave up six runs (five earned) in three innings against San Francisco on Sunday, a game the D-backs rallied to win, 7-6, with six innings of scoreless relief. "He didn't make good pitches," manager Kirk Gibson said. Collmenter's next scheduled start is Saturday at Colorado.
--Top prospects RHP Trevor Bauer and LHP Patrick Corbin had impressive debuts at Class AA Mobile. Bauer struck out seven in five scoreless innings in the BayBears' 5-2 victory over Mississippi in the season opener Thursday, and Corbin struck out six in six scoreless innings of an 8-2 victory over Mississippi on Sunday. Rotation members Bauer, Corbin, RHP Charles Brewer and LHP Tyler Skaggs returned to Mobile after helping the BayBears to a the Southern League title last year.
BY THE NUMBERS
6 -- The D-Backs overcame a six-run deficit in a 7-6 victory over San Francisco on Sunday, tying a franchise record for largest deficit overcome in a victory.
