Offensive breakdown causing worry in Bronx

The Sports Xchange

It's not often that members of the Yankee offense are beating themselves up after a series with the Orioles. But the sagging lineup was completely shut down in dropping a series to Baltimore at Yankee Stadium and suddenly no one could remember how Yankees were whirling around the bases for most of the first month.

The Yankees did not get a runner to second base in the series finale, a 5-0 loss to Jake Arrieta, and had three runs and 17 hits over the three games. It was the first time the Orioles had limited the Yanks to two runs or fewer in three consecutive games in the Bronx since 1978.

"We're just not swinging the bats very well right now and we haven't for the last few days," said Yankee manager Joe Girardi, whose club entered the night averaging 5.3 runs, fourth in the majors. "You're going to go through those periods as an offense. It's just part of the game. Hopefully we turn around tomorrow (when the Yanks start a series in Kansas City)."

There have been some troubling signs for the offense, particularly that Robinson Cano is not generating the kind of power the Yanks are used to -- he's got one homer, four RBI and a .367 slugging percentage so far. Mark Teixeira is one point below Cano at .366.

Girardi says he has confidence that such important hitters will eventually soar. Alex Rodriguez has showed signs of perking up -- he had his second consecutive two-hit game Wednesday.

But the rest of the lineup was only 3-for-27.

"I've just been bad the last week and a half, since Boston," Teixeira said. "Haven't really been doing much. Looking forward to getting to Kansas City and some warm weather and hopefully heat up in more than one way."
