Marlins lose CF Bonifacio to sprained thumb

CBSSports.com wire reports

CLEVELAND -- Miami Marlins center fielder Emilio Bonifacio, who leads the majors in stolen bases, could be headed for the disabled list because of a sprained left thumb.

Bonifacio is out of the lineup for Saturday's game at Cleveland. An MRI on Saturday revealed the sprain. Manager Ozzie Guillen says going on the DL is a possibility, but adds Indians doctors said Bonifacio won't need surgery.

Guillen said Bonifacio will be examined by Marlins doctors when the team returns home to open a series against Colorado on Monday.

Bonifacio, who has stolen 20 bases, jammed his hand on a dive back to first base Friday. He then was thrown out by catcher Carlos Santana, the first time Bonifacio has been caught stealing this season.

Bryan Petersen took Bonifacio's spot in center field.
