The Sports Xchange

--CF Franklin Gutierrez played a full nine innings Monday for Class AAA Tacoma on his rehab assignment, going 2-for-4. He is 4-for-12 (.333) with four walks through four games. The reports were that Gutierrez (right pectoral muscle injury and additional foot problems) came out of Monday's game feeling good.

--C Miguel Olivo has thrown out 10 runners attempting to steal. That total leads all AL catchers. Overall, he's caught 10 of 26 (38.5 percent).

--3B Kyle Seager has the second-most extra-base hits among American League third baseman, 24, trailing only Miguel Cabrera's 27. Seager has 16 doubles, one triple and seven homers.

--SS Joe DeCarlo (Glen Mills, Pa.), RHP Edwin Diaz (Puerto Rico) and LHP Tyler Pike (Winter Haven, Fla.) were taken by Seattle in the second, third and supplemental third rounds in the draft Tuesday. DeCarlo has signed to play as a third baseman with Georgia, and Pike has committed to Florida State. Diaz, who is 6-foot-2, 160 pounds, throws in the upper-90 mph range.

--C Mike Zunino, who was the Mariners' first pick in the draft Monday, was named as one of three finalists for the Golden Spikes Award. USA Baseball is in the 35th year of giving the award to the nation's top amateur player.

--CF Michael Saunders singled, doubled and homered and is now hitting .471 on the road trip with one game to play before returning to Safeco Field on Friday. While going 16-for-34 (.471) on the trip, Saunders has five doubles, two homers and five RBI.

--RHP Felix Hernandez won't pitch again until at least Sunday. Hernandez, who is dealing with ongoing back pain, is scheduled to throw on the side Wednesday, then throw a bullpen session Thursday or Friday. If all goes well, he could start Sunday against the Dodgers. In the meanwhile, RHP Hector Noesi pitches for Hernandez on Wednesday on short rest.

7 -- Consecutive games in which the Mariners have hit a homer after CF Michael Saunders went deep Tuesday. That's a season high for Seattle and the longest streak for the team since 2009.

"He wants to pitch, and I love that." -- Manager Eric Wedge, on RHP Felix Hernandez, currently being held out of the rotation due to back pain.
