Including a 1-for-2 effort in Pittsburgh's 4-1 victory over the Tigers on Friday night at PNC Park, Alvarez is on a 10-for-19, five-homer roll over the past six games.
"He's hotter than anybody in the majors," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said.
Thing is, just before this, Alvarez was in a 4-for-38 nosedive.
"I'm just trying to go up there and relax and compete," he said. "Be selective. Try to swing at some good pitches that I can drive."
Manager Clint Hurdle said of Alvarez's inconsistency, "That's a billion dollar question. Hopefully, the kid's maturation, the experience in the league ... I think it comes back to a guy ... getting comfortable in the box and putting his 'A' swing out there and trusting it."
Only time will tell. Even with Alvarez's recent exploits, his average is still .221.
