Venable proving to be clutch hitter

--RF Will Venable drove in a pair of runs Monday night with singles in the first and second innings. Venable is hitting .367 (22-for-60) with runners in scoring position this season. He is hitting .436 (17-for-39) in his last 39 RISP situations.

--RHP Brad Brach came on in relief of RHP Edinson Volquez and struck out National League batting leader Andrew McCutchen with two on and two out in the seventh. The rookie Brach has allowed only two of the 34 runners he has inherited this season to score. The 94.1 percent success rate ranks second in the major leagues.

--RHP Dale Thayer struck out Andrew McCutchen with a runner on second to end the game Thayer's seventh save in as many attempts makes the Padres a perfect 28-for-28 in save opportunities. The injured Huston Street is 21-for-21.

--RHP Luke Gregerson worked a scoreless eighth to extend his scoreless innings streak to 18 2/3 since July 4. Over that span, he has allowed 10 hits and three walks (including one of each Monday night) while striking out 19.

--SS Everth Cabrera had his second consecutive three-hit game Monday night. He is 8-for-16 in a four-game hitting streak to raise his average from .226 top .243.

16 -- Padres wins in the last 19 games against the Pirates. Over the run, the Padres have out-scored the Padres 121-67.
