Fracture forces Marquis to wear a cast

The Sports Xchange

--RHP Jason Marquis has a cast on his left wrist. Marquis was struck on his left hand Tuesday night by a line drive back to the mound but continued to pitch for another 66 pitches. An X-ray after the game showed nothing, but a CT-scan Wednesday showed a fracture to the trapezium bone in his left thumb. The Padres will make a decision about Marquis pitching again over the weekend.

--SS Everth Cabrera stole two bases Saturday and set another Padres record. Cabrera has 24 consecutive steals to start this year and has made 28 successful steals in a row dating back to the 2010 season. That is the longest streak in Padres history without being caught. Jerry Mumphrey had 27 consecutive steals in 1980, which is still the Padres single-season consecutive steals record.

--RHP Luke Gregerson extended his scoreless inning streak to 20 2/3 innings with a scoreless inning Wednesday. It is the Padres second-longest scoreless inning streak this season to Huston Street's run of 21 1/3 innings.

--LHP Tom Layne picked up the first save of his career Wednesday.

--LF Carlos Quentin had a two-run hit in the first inning for a second consecutive game Wednesday. In the last two games against the Pirates, Quentin was 3-for-8 with two doubles and six RBI.

18-3 -- Padres' record against the Pirates over the last 21 games dating to Sept. 19, 2009. The Padres have outscored the Pirates 133-74 during the run. The Padres won five of six games this season.

"You just don't want to get boat-raced in the first inning. If you told me two years ago that I'd be in a major league game, I'd have told you that you were crazy." -- LHP Andrew Werner, 25, who won his major league debut Wednesday.
