Werner keeps up quality

The Sports Xchange

--LHP Andrew Werner on Sunday turned in his fourth quality start in as many major league outings. The only other Padres pitchers with four straight quality starts to begin their careers were Joey Hamilton (1994) and Bob Shirley (1977). Werner (2-1, 2.59 ERA) allowed one run on four hits in 6 1/3 innings Sunday after allowing exactly two runs over six innings in each of his first three starts.

--RF Chris Denorfia extended his hitting streak to 10 games, with a homer leading off the sixth Sunday. Denorfia is 13-for-34 (.382) during the streak with a double, three home runs, nine RBI and seven runs scored. He is hitting .395 (17-for-43) over his last 15 games and is hitting .340 (54-for-159) against left-handed pitchers this season.

--RHP Casey Kelly, 22, has given up 13 runs (11 earned) on 16 hits, including five homers, in eight innings over his last two starts since allowing only three hits over six shutout innings in his major league debut against Atlanta on Aug. 27.

--LF Carlos Quentin returned to the starting lineup Sunday after missing two straight games and three of the last five with irritation in the right knee that was surgically repaired in spring training. He doubled and homered Sunday, and 22 of his last 39 hits have gone for extra bases.

--2B Logan Forsythe is hitting .341 (28-for-82) over his last 23 games since Aug. 2. The rookie is hitting .364 (32-for-88) against left-handed pitching this season and has a club-leading .312 average (34-for-109) at Petco Park this season.

--LHP Clayton Richard and wife Ashley welcomed their first child, a son, at 10:40 p.m. Friday. Cashton Richard weighed 9 pounds and was 20 inches.

1 -- Set of back-to-back homers by the Padres this season, Chase Headley's eighth-inning grand slam followed by Carlos Quentin's solo shot on Sunday.

"When you sustain this kind of damage for an extended period of time like this, I don't think you are running on hot anymore. I think you're just doing what you do." -- Padres hitting coach Phil Plantier on Chase Headley, who has 15 homers and 50 RBI since Aug. 1.
