Volquez doesn't allow a walk -- finally

--RHP Edinson Volquez allowed four runs on eight hits over six innings Wednesday night but was pleased because he didn't issue a walk for the first time this season. "I can't complain. I was very happy about my stuff and no walks ... it's about time," he said.

--The 6-2 loss at Arizona Wednesday night officially eliminated the Padres from the National League West race. They are still very faintly alive in the wild card race.

--CF Cameron Maybin is expected to return to center field Wednesday afternoon in Arizona. He has missed two games because of a sore Achilles tendon.

--RF Will Venable drove in the Padres' first run Wednesday, giving him RBI in three straight games and six RBI in his last eight games. The latter matches his total for his previous 24 games.

--RHP Casey Kelly will make RHP Andrew Cashner's scheduled start Friday in San Francisco. Kelly had been scheduled to start Saturday. LHP Andrew Werner also moves up a day and will start Satrurday night.

0 -- Walks issued by Edinson Volquez Wednesday night, the first time in 30 starts this season that he didn't walk a hitter. Volquez has walked a National League-leading 100 batters this season.

"It kind of bothered me for a while and gave me a sharp pain when I tried to cut loose with my fastball. I still feel I can pitch, but I can't cut the fastball loose." -- RHP Andrew Cashner talking about the tendon injury in his right armpit that forced him to be shut down for the last two weeks of the 2012 season. The triple-digit fastball of earlier this season topped out at 95 mph in his two starts since coming off the disabled list.
