MIAMI -- Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees says he will have surgery on his injured left hip in "mid-January."

Speaking Saturday at a breakfast he hosted for about 150 high school players competing in his annual Miami tournament, Rodriguez spoke for several minutes about his experiences growing up in South Florida.

He then asked the players for questions and got only one, about the date of his surgery.

The Yankees announced earlier this month that Rodriguez needs surgery to correct a torn labrum and other problems with his left hip. He could miss up to six months.
