Pitcher Pelchy banned 50 games after refusing to take drug test

CBSSports.com wire reports

NEW YORK -- Free-agent pitcher Kyle Pelchy has been suspended 50 games under baseball's minor-league drug program after refusing to take an offseason test.

Pelchy was penalized Wednesday by the commissioner's office. The penalty will start when he signs with a big league organization.

The 23-year-old right-hander was 0-2 with a 5.25 ERA in 12 relief appearances this year for the rookie league Gulf Coast Rays, then was released. He played four years for Virginia Commonwealth and wasn't drafted.

There have been 104 suspensions this year under the minor-league drug problem and eight under the major-league program.
