Mets' pitching prospect gets 50 games for second drug violation wire reports

NEW YORK -- A minor-league pitcher in the New York Mets' organization has drawn a 50-game drug penalty.

Right-hander Christian Montgomery was banned Tuesday by the commissioner's office under the minor-league program for a second violation for a drug of abuse.

The 20-year-old Montgomery made his professional debut last year for rookie level Kingsport in the Appalachian League. He was 0-1 with a 9.39 ERA in two starts.

The penalty will take effect when the Appalachian League season begins in late June.

There have been 16 suspensions this year under the minor-league program.
