In the Eye On Baseball Top 10s, here's what we do: rank players according to criteria. Those criteria change depending upon week and whim, but the Top 10 always will be informed by some angle or another. (Note that the absence of an angle is itself an angle!)
And that brings us to this week's guiding query: Among the players eligible for free agency this past offseason, which have provided the most "bang for the buck" in 2013 ("bang" being productivity at their chosen craft and "buck" being their 2013 salary)?
Note that we're ranking them with no regard to their future performance or, say, how much they'll be paid in 2017. It's all about excellence in 2013 at a nominal cost for 2013. Again, though, these are only players who were eligible for free agency this past winter, so don't flip out when you don't see Miguel Cabrera's name. Or do. Whatever.
Also not on the list? Mariano Rivera. As great he has been and as (very) good as he is right now, he's being paid $10 million to pitch 70 innings or so. He's headed for Cooperstown but not the hallowed contents of this list.
Someone not on here who you strongly believe should be? I absolutely don't care!
So now let us recite baseball names for purposes of SEO and making you angry. As always, feel free to brandish your incorrect opinions and make idle threats in the comments section.
