NEW YORK -- Jim Duquette will become the New York Mets' permanent general manager Tuesday.
Duquette, who has been interim general manager since Steve Phillips was fired in June, will be given the title during a news conference at Shea Stadium, the team said Monday.
Houston GM Gerry Hunsicker, who had been given permission to talk to the Mets, agreed Oct. 16 to a contract extension with the Astros through 2005.
New York also talked with Montreal GM Omar Minaya about a senior executive job, but he decided last weekend to remain with the Expos.
Duquette was not available for comment Monday, Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz said.
