PHOENIX -- Eric Chavez selected eight
teams he can't be traded to without permission as part of his $66
million, six-year extension with the Oakland Athletics.
As part of the deal, the sides agreed the third baseman's consent would
be needed for trades to Cleveland, Florida, Milwaukee, Minnesota,
Montreal, New York Mets, Tampa Bay and Toronto.
Chavez will make $5.2 million this year under his previous contract.
His new deal calls for a $3 million signing bonus, payable in $500,000
installments each Nov. 16 from 2004 through 2009. Chavez gets $8 million
in 2005, $9 million each in 2006 and 2007, $11 million each in 2008 and
2009 and $12 million in 2010.
Oakland has a $12.5 million option for 2011 with a $3 million buyout.
