Love Letters: Losers, winners, whiners

Insider | Short Hops

Hot fun in the summertime ...

From: Dan Barsnica

BoSox as winners?! Are you serious. They lose one of the best shortstops in the history of the game and replace him with ... Orlando Cabrera. They were eventually going to have to say goodbye to Nomah, but don't tell me it's a better team without him.

It wasn't a one-for-one. They got Doug Mientkiewicz in that deal, too. Or were you happy watching ground balls roll on by David Ortiz and Kevin Millar?

From: Ron Vazzano

Scott, your assessment of the trades over the weekend is so biased against the Yankees it is almost laughable. There was not an ounce of objectivity and sound thinking on your part, in the matter of how the Yankees came out of this weekend.

Because the Yankees did not land (Randy) Johnson does not make them losers. The fact that they had nothing to offer the Diamondbacks and that NO ONE else got Johnson --- and that they will not have to face him in this postseason -- is huge! That, coupled with the fact that they were able to unload a pitcher who was useless to them as he could not beat any team above .500 -- especially Boston, against whom he literally choked EVERY TIME -- for a pitcher who almost won the Cy Young award just last year and pitched well against them in postseason -- Esteban Loaiza -- makes them winners.

Loaiza is not Johnson. But he is not Jose Contreras, either.

Let's see how Loaiza fares in October.

You forgot to put your name in there as a LOSER. Because you know as much about BASEBALL as I know about BRAIN SURGERY.
