ST. LOUIS -- The Cardinals cleared roster space for newly acquired Larry Walker on Saturday, placing right-hander Kiko Calero on the 15-day disabled list with a shoulder injury.
Manager Tony La Russa had been mulling various moves before Calero, who gave up back-to-back home runs to the only batters he faced Friday night, reported with shoulder soreness.
Calero is 1-0 with a 3.31 ERA in 29 games with one save. He has allowed four homers in 32 2/3 innings.
Walker, the 1997 NL MVP and three-time NL batting champion, waived his no-trade clause Friday night to join the major league-leading Cardinals in a deal that sent minor league pitcher Jason Burch and two players to be named to Colorado.
Walker was to arrive at Busch Stadium less than an hour before the afternoon game. He was not in the lineup, but La Russa said he wouldn't hesitate to use him off the bench.
Reggie Sanders was in left field, his new position, for the first time all season. He's moving from right field to make room for Walker. Sanders prefers right field and that's where he's played the most. But he doesn't mind moving.
"I think it's what you tell yourself," Sanders said. "It's more of a mental adjustment than a physical adjustment."
