Ambres, an outfielder, was the first-round selection of the Florida
Marlins in the 1998 draft. He spent last season with Double-A Carolina
where he hit .241 with 28 doubles, 20 home runs and 62 RBI. He also
walked 76 times for a .352 on-base percentage.
Berg, an infielder, has played seven major-league seasons for the
Marlins and Blue Jays. He hit .253 with three homers and 23 RBI in 58
games with Toronto last season, and has career marks of .269 with 21
home runs and 163 RBI.
Gonzalez, a right-handed pitcher, is 24-32 with a 4.69 ERA in 79
appearances in four major-league seasons with the Cubs and Tampa Bay. He
split last season between the Devil Rays and Triple-A Durham.
Manzanillo was signed by the Red Sox in 1983. He was 3-3 with one save
and a 6.12 ERA in 26 appearances with the Marlins last season. He is
13-15 with six saves and a 4.71 ERA in 267 appearances in his
major-league career with the Red Sox, Milwaukee, the New York Mets and
Yankees, Seattle, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Florida.
Boston also extended spring training invitations to right-handers Scott
Cassidy, Jack Cressend and Kris Wilson; left-hander Jason Kershner;
catchers Jeff Bailey and Shawn Wooten; infielders Tim Hummel, Dave
McCarty and Kenny Perez; outfielders George Lombard, Billy McMillon and
Simon Pond.
McCarty, a free-agent first baseman, played for the Red Sox last year.
