Yankees' Pavano knocked out by Mora liner

NEW YORK -- Yankees pitcher Carl Pavano was hit in the head by Melvin Mora's line drive and left New York's game against Baltimore in the third inning Sunday.

Pavano was taken to Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center for precautionary studies, the Yankees said. When he came out of the game, he was alert.

One pitch after first baseman Jason Giambi dropped Mora's foul pop for an error, Mora lined the ball up the middle. It ricocheted off Pavano and landed in foul territory behind first base for a single that sent Brian Roberts from first to third.

Pavano remained standing, but immediately was replaced by Tanyon Sturtze.
