CHICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox placed
infielder Willie Harris on the
bereavement list Tuesday, and purchased infielder/catcher Jamie Burke's
contract from Triple-A Charlotte to replace Harris.
The White Sox would not comment on the reason for Harris' absence.
Harris, hitting .310 with one RBI in 13 games, and must remain on the
bereavement list for three days. White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said
Harris is expected to rejoin the team in Tampa Bay for a three-game
series that starts May 9.
"I told him to take his time because family comes first," Guillen said.
Burke hit .284 with three home runs and nine RBI in 24 games for
Charlotte. He hit .333 with 15 RBI in 47 games with the White Sox last
season.
"We need someone who can play first base and the outfield in an
emergency," Guillen said. "He can also pinch run for one of my catchers
and make sure I have some protection."
