PHOENIX -- Detroit Tigers shortstop Carlos Guillen was activated from the 15-day disabled list before Sunday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The team also announced that outfielder Magglio Ordonez will began a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Monday.
Guillen, sidelined since June 8 with a pulled hamstring, started and batted third. Guillen entered the game batting .355 with two homers and 16 RBI in 45 games.
To make room for Guillen, the Tigers reassigned Tony Giarratano to Double-AA Erie. Giarratano hit .143 in 15 games for Detroit.
Ordonez, signed to a five-year, $75 million contract in the offseason, has appeared in just three games with one hit in 10 at-bats because of a hernia. Ordonez has played a total of 55 games the past two seasons because of injuries. An ailing left knee limited to Ordonez to 52 games with the Chicago White Sox last year.
Indians prospect hospitalized
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Cleveland Indians minor-league pitcher Kyle Denney was taken to a hospital after being hit in the head by a line drive.
Starting for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons in an International League game against the Durham Bulls, Denney was struck above his right ear on a liner hit by Joey Gathright, the first batter of the game.
After more than 10 minutes of medical attention on the field, Denney was carried off on a stretcher and taken to Erie County Medical Center. He was expected to be held overnight for observation.
Trainer Todd Tomczyk said Denney suffered a concussion but didn't lose consciousness. The 27-year-old pitcher could be sidelined four to six weeks.
Mientkiewicz injured in on-deck circle
NEW YORK -- Doug Mientkiewicz was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the New York Mets after injuring his right hamstring in the on-deck circle.
The first baseman had an MRI that revealed a slight tear. He said he had never pulled a muscle in his life.
The Mets purchased the contract of veteran infielder Jose Offerman from Triple-A Norfolk.
Mientkiewicz was hurt warming up for his first at-bat during the Mets' 10-3 victory over the Yankees on Saturday. He stayed in and batted twice before leaving in the fifth inning.
Reese gets engaged, called up by Yanks
NEW YORK -- Kevin Reese didn't know what to say first when he called his friends.
"I'm getting married. By the way, I just got called up to the big leagues," he told some.
For others, he reversed the order.
With Bernie Williams struggling defensively, the New York Yankees purchased the contract of the 27-year-old outfielder from Triple-A Columbus and immediately put him in the lineup against the Mets. Reese played left field and batted ninth, with Tony Womack shifted to center.
Molina passes Nunez on basepaths
ST. LOUIS -- Frozen stiff between first and second, Abraham Nunez took the St. Louis Cardinals out of a big inning.
Nunez's indecision led to an unusual double play when teammate Yadier Molina passed him on the basepaths in a 5-4, 10-inning loss to Pittsburgh.
Nunez's gaffe became one of six double plays for the Pirates, tying a franchise record. It's been done three times in team history, the last in 1948 in the first game of a doubleheader against the Cardinals.
The play came with one out and runners on first and second. Nunez, who was on first, apparently thought Molina's drive was caught by right fielder Matt Lawton and was retreating to first as Molina rounded the bag and passed him while gesturing to his teammate to turn around.
Padres' Nevin heads to DL
SAN DIEGO -- Padres first baseman Phil Nevin was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained muscle in his left side.
The move was made retroactive to Tuesday. Outfielder Ben Johnson was recalled from Triple-A Portland to take Nevin's roster spot.
Nevin hurt himself during batting practice Tuesday night and hasn't played since. He was supposed to swing a bat Sunday but didn't try. Manager Bruce Bochy thought the slugger would be ready by next Friday, but with center fielder Dave Roberts nursing a sore knee, Bochy didn't want to be down two players.
Reds put Keisler on 15-day DL
CLEVELAND -- The Cincinnati Reds placed left-hander Randy Keisler on the 15-day disabled list and recalled lefty Brian Shackelford from Triple-A Louisville.
The move on Keisler, who has inflammation in his left elbow, was made retroactive to June 20. He is the third Reds player to go on the DL in three days, joining outfielder Kenny Kelly, who has torn left knee cartilage, and infielder-outfielder Ryan Freel, sidelined with an inflamed toe on his left foot.
Keisler, 29, had a 2-0 record and 5.49 ERA in 19 2/3 innings over eight relief appearances.
