AL roundup: Bonderman just short of complete game for 13th win

DETROIT -- Jeremy Bonderman pitched into the ninth inning for his 13th win, and Curtis Granderson homered and tripled to send the Detroit Tigers to a 5-2 victory Sunday over the Minnesota Twins.

Carlos Guillen also connected and Magglio Ordonez added three hits for the Tigers (49-49), who have reached .500 by winning 12 of 18 -- including three of five against the Twins and two of three against the first-place White Sox in the past week. Minnesota has lost 11 of 18.

Bonderman (13-6) is second in the AL in wins, trailing only 15-game winner Jon Garland of Chicago. The 22-year-old right-hander allowed two runs, seven hits and two walks while striking out six.

He gave up a leadoff homer to Joe Mauer in the ninth and a single to Torii Hunter before leaving to a standing ovation from the crowd of 27,966. Kyle Farnsworth finished for his fifth save.

Kyle Lohse (7-9) gave up five runs -- four earned -- and 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings in the loss. Full story

Devil Rays 6, Orioles 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Casey Fossum took a three-hitter into the seventh inning, and Carl Crawford broke open a close game with a two-run homer in the eighth to help Tampa Bay finish a sweep of struggling Baltimore.

Jorge Cantu had an RBI double and Toby Hall snapped a fourth-inning tie with a run-scoring single off Erik Bedard (5-2) to help Fossum overcome solo homers by Sammy Sosa and Sal Fasano.

Sosa's fourth-inning shot was his 585th, moving him within one of Frank Robinson for fifth on the career list.

Fasano's ninth of the season gave the Orioles a 1-0 lead in the third.

Royals 6, Blue Jays 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Angel Berroa homered during a four-run outburst with two outs in the fourth inning, leading Kansas City past Toronto in the sweltering heat.

Blue Jays starter Ted Lilly retired his first 11 batters in the 96-degree heat and looked almost unhittable while carrying a 4-0 lead. Then the next four batters combined to hit for the cycle, starting with Emil Brown's two-out double.

Matt Stairs' RBI single made it 4-1, then Berroa hit Lilly's next pitch for his seventh home run. Mark Teahen tripled into left-center and rookie Chip Ambres singled into center for his first major-league RBI, tying it at 4-4.

D.J. Carrasco (5-4) recovered from a shaky start to get the win, going six innings in the stifling heat and giving up four runs and six hits, with three walks and three strikeouts.

Indians 6, Mariners 3

CLEVELAND -- Kevin Millwood won for the first time in five July starts and Victor Martinez hit a three-run homer, helping Cleveland knock off Seattle.

Martinez had three hits. His 11th homer, off reliever J.J. Putz in the seventh inning, gave Millwood more runs with one swing than the Indians have averaged in the right-hander's 18 starts.

Millwood (4-9) snapped his four-game losing streak. The Indians had been shut out three times and scored a total of two runs in those games.
