Nationals' Vidro won't give up position for Soriano

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Washington Nationals Jose Vidro said he doesn't intend to give up second base to please new arrival Alfonso Soriano.

Vidro, 31, a three-time All-Star, is recovering from a knee injury. He played in only 87 games in 2005, hitting .275 with seven homers and 32 RBI.

Soriano, 26, hit .268 with 36 homers, a career-best 104 RBI and 30 steals last season. The Nationals acquired the four-time All-Star earlier this month from the Texas Rangers.

Soriano has said he won't change positions, and Vidro said he won't either.

Soriano "is a tremendous plus for the team. But I'm a bit confused about what can happen if he doesn't want to play left field," Vidro told the local daily, El Nuevo Dia for Tuesday's editions.

Vidro, who would like to play for his native Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic, said Washington has told him he can't play because of his injury.

"I'm going to try to get a better explanation," Vidro said, "because my knee is in perfect shape."

Soriano will play in the Classic for the Dominican Republic team, along with Vladimir Guerrero, David Ortiz, Albert Pujols, Manny Ramirez and Miguel Tejada.

The sport's first World Cup-style tournament includes 16 teams playing games in the United States, Puerto Rico and Japan. It's scheduled for March 3-20.
