Nationals' Patterson sidelined with tendinitis

WASHINGTON -- Washington Nationals right-hander John Patterson was given an injection to treat what was diagnosed as tendinitis in his right forearm, and shortstop Cristian Guzman had season-ending surgery on his right shoulder Tuesday.

Patterson was examined by Dr. James Andrews in Alabama on Monday and received the shot in the area of one of his forearm tendons. He will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis.

The pitcher has not appeared for the Nationals since April 21. He is on the disabled list and is not expected to return to the majors earlier than May 18.

Guzman will begin rehab work immediately and is expected to be ready for spring training in 2007. He was sidelined early in spring training by soreness in his throwing shoulder.
