Karsay retirement opens spot for Sauerbeck in A's 'pen

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland Athletics agreed to a one-year contract with left-handed reliever Scott Sauerbeck on Monday, one day after Steve Karsay announced his retirement and opened a spot in the bullpen.

Sauerbeck was scheduled to join the A's in Denver on Monday night for the opener of a three-game interleague series with the Colorado Rockies.

The 34-year-old Sauerbeck, in his seventh big league season, went 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA in 24 relief appearances for Cleveland this season before being designated for assignment June 9 and then unconditionally released June 16.
