DETROIT (AP) -Former New York Yankees, Montreal and Cincinnati general manager Murray Cook was hired Monday by the Detroit Tigers as their East Coast scouting crosschecker.
Cook joins the Tigers after scouting for the Boston Red Sox from 2002-06 and the Florida Marlins for the previous 11 seasons, when he worked for Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski.
The Yankees hired him as director of player development in 1983, then promoted him to general manager later that year - a position he filled for a little more than a year. Cook went on to be Montreal's general manager in 1984 before becoming Cincinnati's GM in 1987.
Cook will be one of the Tigers' four regional crosscheckers, who follow up on reports lower-level scouts make in their areas.
The Tigers also promoted two minor league managers. Matt Walbeck is going to Double-A Erie from Single-A West Michigan and former Tigers third baseman Tom Brookens is taking Walbeck's place in Grand Rapids after being Oneonta's manager in a short-season league.
