News
Phillies pitcher Jerome Williams turned in a strong start Monday against the Mariners.

Williams allowed one run on three hits over seven innings. He struck out four and walked three during the outing. Williams was excellent to begin the game, tossing seven scoreless innings. He gave up his only run in the eighth inning. After hitting leadoff hitter Chris Taylor, Williams was pulled from the game. That run wound up coming around to score, and was charged to Williams.

With the win, Williams improved to 1-0 with his new club. He’ll take on the Cardinals in his next start.

News
Braves pitcher Ervin Santana couldn’t go six innings Monday against the Pirates.

Santana allowed three runs on nine hits over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked two during the outing. Home runs were a big problem for Santana. Santana allowed three solo shots during the start. Starling Marte was a thorn in his side, accounting for two of those solo home runs. Neil Walker drilled the third homer. Santana was replaced after putting men on second and third in the sixth inning.

With the win, Santana improved to 13-6. He’ll take on the Reds in his next start.

News
Angels pitcher Jered Weaver had some control issues Tuesday against the Red Sox.

Weaver allowed three runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out one and walked four during the outing. An early home run by David Ortiz put Weaver down by a run during the first inning. He settled in at that point, tossing three straight scoreless innings. He ran into more trouble in the fifth. After giving up a single and a walk, Weaver threw a wild pitch to put both runners in scoring position. One run would score on a groundout, but Weaver would get out of the inning without giving up any more runs. He was pulled after putting two hitters on in the sixth inning. One run would come around to score after Weaver left the game. That run was charged to Weaver.

Weaver left with the game tied, earning a no-decision. He’ll take on the Athletics in his next start.

News
Call it a hunch.

Mark Trumbo has always been a streaky player. He hit .314 (11 for 35) with five home runs in his first nine games with the Diamondbacks only to hit .130 (6 for 46) with two in his next 12 before going on the DL with a stress fracture in his left foot. That's just one example, of course. The most extreme came in 2012, when he hit .306 with 22 home runs in the first half only to hit .227 with 10 in the second half.

We can agree on that, right? Streaky.

So while some may view his power outage since coming off the DL -- he has only one home run in 108 at-bats -- as cause for alarm, I view it as Trumbo being Trumbo. And I take solace in this: In his last 16 games, he's batting .351 (20 for 57).

Trumbo has never been a singles hitter. When he's hot, he mashes by anyone's standards. So then, he hasn't really gotten hot yet. But he's clearly seeing the ball well; he's clearly putting a good swing on it. We're just catching the first glimpse of what's to come.

Keep the faith, Trumbo owners.

Kendrick is batting .280 with one double, one home run, six RBI, six runs, four walks and 12 strikeouts in his last 13 games.

Mariners closer Fernando Rodney picked up a one-out save Tuesday against the Phillies.

Rodney was called upon to close the door during an emergency situation. The Mariners entered the inning up by five runs, but the bullpen collapsed. Rodney entered the game with the tying run at the plate. He struck out Cody Asche to end the threat. It was Rodney's 36th save of the season.
