News
Angels starting pitcher Jered Weaver put together a solid outing Wednesday against the Nationals, but a bullpen meltdown cost him  the chance to get back to .500 in a 5-4 loss.

Weaver tossed six solid innings in the outing as he recorded his second quality start in a row. He limited the Nationals to just one run while scattering seven hits and a walk, despite striking out a season-low two batters, while throwing 53 of 82 pitches for strikes.

Weaver was in good shape to pick up his second win of the season, but the bullpen let him down. He remains 1-2 with a 4.11 ERA, and will go for the win in his next trip to the mound, Tuesday against the Indians.

News
Angels starting pitcher Garrett Richards put together another solid effort on Monday, but failed to factor into the decision against the Nationals.

Richards surrendered a run on a fielder's choice in the fourth inning for his only blemish of the night. He yielded only one run on one hit and four walks while striking out six over six innings pitched. He tossed 99 pitches, 55 of which were strikes.

Richards has allowed one run or fewer in three of his first four starts. He owns a 2.52 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP in 25 innings pitched. He is scheduled to make his next start Sunday in New York against the Yankees.

Hunter had been dealing with a knee injury earlier in the year, but played in seven straight games. His Wednesday day off was not connected to the knee issues. Hunter will hit fifth and play right field Thursday.

News
Tigers shortstop Andrew Romine has been given a game off in favor of Danny Worth on Wednesday against the White Sox, but has solidified the position offensively in the wake of the probable loss for the season of starter Jose Iglesias.

Romine had a six-game hitting streak ended Wednesday night. He is 6 for 17 with four walks and two stolen bases since takiing over the starting spot upon the release of previous starter Alex Gonzalez.

News
Rockies starting pitcher Tyler Chatwood received plenty of help in his start against the Giants Wednesday, but could not make it stand up in a 12-10, extra-innings loss.

Chatwood was staked to an early 5-1 lead through two innings, which makes his ultimate failure to make that stand up all the more disappointing. His lead lasted just one inning, as the Giants took him deep twice in the third inning to tie the game.

Chatwood was ultimately charged with five runs on seven hits and four walks in six innings of work. Each run allowed came by way of the longball, as the Giants took him deep three times. Chatwood added five strikeouts, while throwing just 53 of 100 pitches for strikes.

Chatwood has one quality start through three trips to the mound this season, and remains 1-0 with a 4.26 ERA through 19 innings of work. He will look for his second win in his next start, Tuesday in Arizona.

News
Some teams have been in contact with free-agent first baseman Kendrys Morales in recent weeks, but he may still wait until after the June draft to sign with a team, CBSSports.com baseball insider Jon Heyman reports.

The Orioles are believed to be one of the teams in contact with Morales, who was yet to find a suitable deal after turning down a qualifying offer at the beginning of last offseason. The Brewers, Mariners and Athletics could also make sense as a destination for the free agent, according to Heyman.

Diamondbacks outfielder Mark Trumbo has been placed on the disabled list Thursday.

News
Cardinals outfielder Peter Bourjos was out of the lineup for the third time in four games  Tuesday against the Mets, as manager Mike Matheny continues to look for a way to spark the offense. Jon Jay replaced Bourjos at center field Tuesday, though Matheny isn't giving up on the punch-less Bourjos.

"I'm trying to get the guys in there that are taking good at-bats," Matheny said. "Peter Bourjos is going to get opportunities. Right now, we've got to get something going."

Bourjos is hitting just .190 with a .261 on-base percentage this season, while spending much of the season batting eighth in the lineup. Still, Matheny believes his approach should lead to good things before long.

"I'm just trying to find his swing, like about half our lineup," Matheny said. "He's got the right approach. He's trying to stay through the ball. He's just finding himself in deep counts and trying to hit tough pitches. It doesn't usually work out for anybody."

Mariners closer Fernando Rodney pitched the ninth inning of Wednesday's game in a nonsave situation and wound up earning the win after giving up one hit and one walk in a scoreless inning of work against the Astros.

Rodney (1-1) also recorded a strikeout in his appearance while keeping his team's deficit at 3-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth. The Seattle offense delivered back-to-back singles to open the inning before Kyle Seager blasted his second home run of the game for the win. Rodney has recorded three saves while posting a 1.42 ERA and 10:4 K:BB ratio in 6 1/3 innings.
