Betemit is on the disabled list with a Grade 2/3 tear in his PCL. He began jogging in a pool Friday.

The switch-hitter has not been cleared for baseball activities and will not be ready to come off the 60-day disabled list when he's eligible May 30.

News
Orioles starter Freddy Garcia did his job Monday at home against the Yankees. Garcia matched with CC Sabathia and kept the Orioles in the game.

Garcia took a no-decision as the game was tied at two when he left. He allowed two solo homers on three hits and two walks over six innings and 66 pitches. Garcia struck out two and his ERA is at 4.84.

The Baltimore fill-in starter was pretty poor in his two previous outings -- both losses -- but did a good job Monday. He'll likely remain in the rotation if there is a need, but his next start is not scheduled.

News
Orioles starter Chris Tillman was solid Sunday at home against the Rays. Unfortunately, he wasn't good enough to avoid losing against Matt Moore and Tampa Bay.

The Rays got a questionable solo home run call in the sixth inning when Matt Joyce belted a ball that ricocheted near the foul pole in right. After several discussions and a video replay, the ball, originally ruled a double, was called a HR. Tillman gave up two homers on the day.

He allowed three earned runs on five hits and a walk over six innings to fall to 3-2 as Moore was sharp once again to improve to 8-0 for the Rays. Tillman struck out four and threw 111 pitches on the start. His ERA is at 3.52.

Tillman is scheduled to make his next starting appearance Friday at Toronto.

Orioles pitcher Jake Arrieta, who was recalled Saturday and will pitch in long relief for Baltimore, said he's learned to take the emotions out of his pitching, the Baltimore Sun reports.

"Absolutely, and sometimes that’s what it takes," Arrieta said. "What I really did is I started to take the emotions out of it."

Arrieta realizes he'll be filling a need in the bullpen. "I just want to be part of helping the team win," he said.

There is a small chance that Arrieta could be asked to start Monday or Tuesday against the Yankees.

Orioles starter Jason Hammel endured another rough outing as he picked up his second loss of the season Friday night against the Rays.

Hammel (5-2), who made his ninth start of the season, surrendered a three-run home run to Kelly Johnson in the third inning. The right-hander was charged with a season-high seven runs and 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings of work. He struck out four and walked two in a 12-10 defeat.

Hammel suffered his first loss since April 7. His ERA has increased from 4.10 to 5.72 after allowing 13 runs and 18 hits over his last two starts. The 30-year-old will make his next start Wednesday at home against the Yankees. He allowed three runs -- two earned -- over six innings in his previous meeting against the Yankees on April 13.

News
Orioles manager Buck Showalter once again backed closer Jim Johnson Monday after he blew his third consecutive save, MLB.com reports.
Johnson can't help but take all the blame for much of Baltimore's current six-game losing streak.

"Well, three of them are my fault. The other guys do their job and I do mine, then we’re not standing here," Johnson said. "I think everybody’s doing a great job. I’m just not pulling my weight. And I’ll figure it out."

Johnson went on to reason that he's leaving the ball up and over the plate.

"That seems to be the common thing lately," Johnson said. "Just not making the adjustment. I’m trying. You know, doing everything. I’m going to work through it. Just like anybody else would. I just need to execute, you know. Balls are coming up, hittable. Just make better pitches."

"Last year, he was a Rule 5 guy and the circumstances were different," Showalter said. "We got him through the year and he was contributor from last year, and I think [he] will be again. But he needs to go get his legs back under him, offensively, his confidence, everything."
