Orioles pitcher Bud Norris has set a goal of pitching 200 innings for the first time in his career, according to MLB.com.

Monday marked Norris' 30th birthday and he's yet to reach that benchmark in his career. A year ago, Norris notched 165 1/3 innings a year ago.

"I felt I was in the best shape of my life last year, and I can say the same thing this year," Norris said. "I feel a little bit better, actually. Going out there consistently every five days and putting up innings is really what it's all about."

News
One look at the box score and you can see Orioles starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez did not have a good spring debut Tuesday against the Tigers. The veteran right-handed pitcher lasted just 1 1/3 innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on two hits and two walks.

Surprisingly, however, Jimenez didn't think his outing was as bad as the numbers indicate.

"I don't want to say I lost control because I had pretty good command of the fastball," he said, per MASNsports.com. "I let a couple slip, two-seam fastballs to hitters, and then I made a mistake with a slider, probably the only one that I threw. I felt good.

"What I was looking for was to command the fastball. I know I walked two guys, but all of the pitches were really close, all of them were close. The only thing I can tell you is I did what I wanted to do and that was commanding the fastball. I threw a lot of fastballs. I only threw three or four breaking balls, mostly fastballs. I wanted to command the fastball and I feel good."

Jimenez did get off to a promising start Tuesday by striking out the first two batters he faced and posting a scoreless first inning. However, things got out of hand quickly as Detroit scored seven times in the second inning.

"It felt good," said Jimenez, who was using the same delivery he switched to in September. "I felt really good. I felt like I was a little bit smoother than before. I was in control of my head and that showed in the first inning."

Elbow - Questionable for start of season (Updated - 3/3/15)
News
Orioles catcher Matt Wieters will get behind the plate Monday to take part in "catcher movement" drills, which involve quickly throwing to each base, MLB.com reports.

"It's got to be a little more reactive and instinctual, which is what we're going to try to accomplish with this," Wieters said. "We'll go by feel. I got into -- a little bit earlier in the rehab -- where I wanted to test it, test it, test it, then you end up pushing it too far and you can set yourself back. It's a matter of just going by feel and getting as much out of it as we can without feeling like we're fatiguing and risking injury."

Wieters caught two innings in Sunday's intrasquad game, marking his first time catching a game since undergoing Tommy John surgery. "It's definitely nice to get back there, but as far as feeling like I was rusty or anything like that, I really didn't. It felt kind of normal back there being a catcher," Wieters said.

The catcher is expected to make his Grapefruit League debut in Tuesday's home opener as the team's designated hitter.

News
Orioles manager Buck Showalter said starting pitcher Miguel Gonzalez is in good shape at the start of spring training, per MASNsports.com.

"I don't know if you all tapped on him, but he's like a rock," Showalter said. "He's got a goal of pitching 200 innings this year because that's been the one kind of bugaboo on him. Miggy's not the type of guy to talk about this, but his whole offseason he spent a lot of time with (vice president of baseball operations) Brady (Anderson). I hit him the other day and it was like hitting a rock. His body fat is actually down and his weight's up.

"The wear and tear, he's always had a couple spots where he's needed a DL period or miss a start. He's very upfront. If you know Miggy's personality, it's not like he's shirking a responsibility. If we can stay away from that, he could go to another level physically. He's done everything he can to be there for us every fifth day.

"He was pretty good last year, but the one thing he's missing is that durability."
