Orioles pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez was ejected from Friday's start in the fourth inning after hitting Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval with a pitch.

Jimenez did not allow a run in 3 2/3 innings, striking out two and walking three.

Kevin Gausman was called upon from the bullpen to relieve Jimenez.

"It was my first one. I was shocked," Jimenez said. '"He's a good hitter and I'm trying to go inside."

Jimenez's next scheduled start is Wednesday in Toronto.

News
Designated hitter Chris Davis' two-run homer in the ninth inning, an opposite-field shot, on Saturday provided the Orioles some breathing room in their 4-1 win over the Red Sox.

"I think early in the season, in my batting practice and in early work, just trying to stay on the ball as long as I can. If that means going the other way or pulling the ball the right way, we talked about that a lot," Davis said to mLB.com.

The homer was just Davis' second this season as the slugger has accumulated 18 strikeouts in 10 games. He also struck out three times.

"It's still early. I'm still trying to find my rhythm and timing. I feel like the more at-bats I'm seeing, the more I'm seeing the ball," Davis said. "[Red Sox starter] Clay [Buchholz] had a real good changeup today. It's pretty much his pitch. He's a guy who if he gets ahead of you early, you've just got to zone him up and he threw me in my first at-bat and my second at-bat, two really good ones. Tip your hat and move on."

News
Orioles first baseman Steve Pearce is still working out the kinks at the plate this season. Pearce went into a stretch of 2 for 30 early in the season, including 14 straight at-bats going hitless. Manager Buck Showalter wants him to slow things down a bit when he steps into the box, reports CSN Baltimore.

"When he's going well, his strike zone management is real good. He's gotten out of that a little bit. He's trying to get four hits in one at-bat," Showalter said.

"The same reason why you love him is the same reason why he'll go through some periods. He's strong enough. He gets a lot of confidence because of the confidence we have in him. At some point, somebody's going to pay because of his troubles."

Pearce hit .293 with 21 home runs and 49 RBI in his first full season in 2014.

"I don't think pressure is the word," Showalter said. "He knows that we understand how tough this is to do…Stevie wants to be a potentially everyday guy like he has the potential to be. He'll get it going."

Orioles starter Chris Tillman (2-1) allowed one earned run on six hits and stuck out five in 5 1/3 innings Saturday to earn the win against the Red Sox.

The one run allowed came via Tillman's fielding error in the sixth inning.

Tillman rebounded from a poor start in his last outing.

"I wanted to get back out there. It felt like an eternity between starts," Tillman said. "After starts like that, it's not fun."

"I thought he had good stuff," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "I think he was challenged by things out of his control."

Tillman's next start is set for Thursday in Toronto.

Orioles pitcher Bud Norris didn't factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing three earned runs on five hits and two walks in five innings while striking out seven in his team's 7-5 win over the Yankees.

Norris took a big step forward Wednesday after surrendering seven runs in three innings in his season debut, but he was on the hook for the loss when he left the game before his offense exploded for five runs in the bottom of the sixth. He owns a 12.38 ERA and 8:3 K:BB ratio in eight innings heading into Tuesday's scheduled start against the Blue Jays.

News
Orioles manager Buck Showalter praised center fielder Adam Jones, who's 11 for 17 with four home runs over his last five games but has walked just once this season, Wednesday, masnsports.com reports.

"He got going a little bit toward the end of spring. He was scuffling a little bit over there and all of a sudden he took off," Showalter said. "Adam's one of those guys where there's some convenient things to say and that fit, but they're not really the truth. If you go back on the pitches he's gotten for a base hit, maybe half of them are strikes. That's why it's so easy to sit there and go, 'Walk more.' Do you like 100 RBIs, do you like .289-300, do you like Gold Glove center field? Yeah, we'd like for him to be the perfect player, but there's no such thing. And we like him as he is. It can get frustrating for him sometimes, but it's kind of who he is. I can't tell you he's doing anything a whole lot different. He's seeing it and hitting it. He's whaling."

Jones has hit .429/.469/.929 with four home runs and 11 RBI in 28 at-bats.

Orioles reliever Tommy Hunter allowed two earned runs on two hits in one inning while striking out one in Wednesday's 7-5 win over the Yankees.

"Tommy's got so much, I don't know, loose energy," manager Buck Showalter said after the game, per MLB.com. "He wants to contribute so bad he kind of gets out of whack a little bit. It's hard to back him off. He'll be better. His track record says he'll go through some bumps and you'll like him when it's all said and done."

Hunter has posted a 14.73 ERA in 3 2/3 innings over his first four appearances.

Jimmy Paredes, activated off the disabled list earlier in the day, is playing designated hitter for the Orioles and hitting fifth in the order.

The insertion of Paredes caused some position shuffling across the Orioles' lineup. Chris Davis, who has been playing DH, moved to first base, and first baseman Steve Pearce moved to right. Right fielder Travis Snider is not in the lineup.

With Jonathan Schoop on the disabled list, Ryan Flaherty steps into the lineup, playing second base and batting eighth.

Manager Buck Showalter expressed his optimism that Schoop escaped the injury without any damage to his ACL. He also added that Schoop will not require surgery, and is expected to return at some point this season. He'll begin his rehab in Sarasota, per MASN Sports.
