Red Sox SP Josh Beckett was roughed up in his return to the mound after missing a start due to flu-like symptoms, giving up four earned runs to the Pirates on Friday. He allowed six hits and two walks with one strikeout in 3 1/3 innings, but wasn't concerned about his stat line. "The numbers don't look good, but the most important number today was 70 pitches," he said. "It would've been nice to take 70 pitches a lot farther than 3 1-3 (innings), but I got my work in." It was the first time in three spring starts he's surrendered more than one earned run.

    News
Slowed at the start of spring training after having thumb surgery in December, Boston Red Sox infielder Mike Lowell is trying to make up for missed time. In two Class A games at Boston's player development complex Friday, Lowell was able to get five plate appearances, more than doubling the four he's had in Grapefruit League games this spring. With the Red Sox playing the Pirates in Bradenton, Lowell stayed behind to get in the extra work. Serving as the designated hitter, bouncing between games on adjacent fields, he had two hits, a two-run homer, three RBI, a walk and a strikeout in his five plate appearances. Lowell dispelled any notion that it might be easy to miss preparation time in spring training and still be able to hit consistently. "Things still feel kind of quick, to be honest with you," Lowell said. "It's just my third day seeing live pitching. But I think it comes quick. I felt a little better each at-bat."

Neck - Expected to return March 25 (Updated - 3/21/10)
    News
Red Sox SP Daisuke Matsuzaka got his first game activity of the spring, pitching in an instrasquad game Sunday against Boston minor leaguers. With the wind at his back, his velocity topped out at 90 mph, according to a scout. Back in the major-league clubhouse after his outing, it was easy to see his satisfaction. "Daisuke was thrilled, because his command was probably where you'd expect it to be, considering it's the first time in that situation," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "But after he came back he was bouncing around. He felt really good about it." Slowed by back and neck ailments this spring, Matsuzaka is scheduled to appear in his first Grapefruit League game Thursday against the Marlins.

Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz pitched four scorelss innings in a minor league game on Thursday, Boston's only scheduled off day of the spring. It was Buchholz's regular day to start and the team wanted to keep him on schedule. Buchholz gave up one hit and struck out four while walking none. "I tried to take it as the same outing as if I was pitching against Tampa Bay or New York or whoever," Buchholz said. "Sometimes it's good to come out here and pitch. But I felt really good physically. Got to use all my pitches. Got through four innings, and got some work in. That's basically the main reason why I threw today - stay on five days' and get the work on." Buchholz used all his pitches and was satisfied with them all. "For the most part, I felt good with all of them," he said. "I was able to find out what I was doing wrong, and switch it in between a pitch instead of it being three or four pitches away. Missed a couple fastballs and felt good when I came back and adjusted. And same thing with a couple of curveballs and changeups. And even the cutter. They all worked at one point in time. So, that builds confidence."

MLB.com reports Red Sox DH David Ortiz, who began the spring 1 for 21, is not concerned about his slow start. "I've got nothing to prove," Ortiz said. "The season is different from spring training. How many guys have you seen struggle in the spring and then 'boom,' crush [the ball during] the season? And how many guys have you seen crush [the ball during] spring training and, when the season starts, struggle?" Ortiz has since raised his average to .231 (6 for 26) and hit his first spring homer on Monday against the Orioles.
