RHP Felipe Paulino returned to the bullpen with the rest of the relievers Monday, and it is unclear if he will get another start before the All-Star break. "I'll just be in the bullpen, so I'm going to the bullpen," he said. "Now it's a matter of what happens on Friday."

    News
From The Sports Xchange: RHP LaTroy Hawkins, who has been dealing with a stiff right neck, downplayed the visit he got from manager Cecil Cooper and trainer Rex Jones after throwing his first two-out pitch in the eighth inning Monday. Cooper and Jones were called out by catcher Humberto Quintero, who noticed Hawkins wince after a pitch. Hawkins said he winced in disgust, not pain. "It doesn't affect the pitching at all," he said of the stiff neck. "Quintero thought I winced, but it was because the pitch I was trying to throw sunk, and I was trying to make it cut. So I was (ticked) off."

    News
Astros SP Brian Moehler lasted just a little too long during Tuesday's 6-3 loss to the Pirates. Moehler entered the seventh in a 2-all tie and opened the inning by retiring Adam A. LaRoche on a grounder. He then walked the next two hitters before being replaced by Tim Byrdak. Both of Moehler's runners scored as Pittsburgh put up a four-spot in the seventh. Moehler was charged with three hits and four runs (three earned) in 6 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out four. He also allowed a homer to Jack Wilson in the third but retired the next 11 batters before the walks in the seventh.

    Injuries
Hamstring - 15-day DL. Out until at least late July (Updated - 7/5/09)
    News
From The Sports Xchange: RHP Doug Brocail, on the DL with a torn left hamstring, threw a bullpen session in front of pitching coach Dewey Robinson for the first time since landing on the DL on May 4. "This is just the first time we've seen him off the mound," Robinson said. "Just from my end of it he looked good. He only threw about 25 fastballs, but the ball's coming out of his hand good." Brocail threw four bullpen sessions while the club was on the seven-game trip that ended Sunday, but he had not thrown a bullpen session in front of the coaches. "This will be the fifth, but it's the first one they've seen," he said. "I'm pain free."

    News
Mike Hampton pitched seven solid innings and the Houston Astros beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-1 on Monday night. Hampton (5-5) allowed one run and three hits to improve to 14-3 with a 2.20 ERA in 20 career starts against Pittsburgh dating to 1995. He has won 10 consecutive starts against the Pirates. Hampton walked the first two batters he faced, but made a nifty defensive play to escape the threat. He caught Delwyn Young's liner back up the middle despite losing his balance and having to steady himself by placing a hand on the dirt behind him. He got to his feet in time to double Jack Wilson off first and Jones grounded out to end the inning. Hampton walked three and struck out three and his ERA is at 4.16.

The Houston Chronicle reports that Astros 2B Kaz Matsui took early batting practice Tuesday in hopes of correcting a flaw in his swing that has resulted in an 0 for 17 slump. “Sometimes my body goes forward and my hands go up too early,” he said. “I’m trying to avoid that. I’m just going through that. Maybe I open up too quickly.”
