If you knew coming into this year that a 24-year-old player who hit .242 with 20 home runs and 73 RBI in 2012 would increase his walk rate significantly while dropping his strikeout rate by over 5 percent, you'd probably draft him a little earlier than usual and expect big things. But this player is Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas, and he has found a way to improve most of his peripherals while laying a goose egg in the stats that matter for Fantasy owners.

Moustakas is hitting .178, with a .183 BABIP (a normal BABIP is around .290-.300). He's walking more, striking out less, and he's hitting ground balls at a lower rate than any time in his career. But he's only getting hits on 14 percent of his ground balls and he's continuing to pop up at a rate of about 18 percent. In short, Moustakas has been very unlucky.

This is why I'm holding him in all my leagues and waiting for the inevitable turnaround. Moustakas is a very good hitter (let Ned Yost fire you up about it) and it's not like he's wildly swinging at pitches outside of the zone, or failing to show patience at the plate. It's ugly now, but Moustakas will continue to play every day and is due for a major correction in his stats. If you've held on this long to the bad, you might as well continue holding for the inevitable good.

Royals starter Wade Davis endured some command issues as he walked four but did not factor in the decision Tuesday night against the Astros.

Davis served up a three-run home run to Jimmy Paredes in the third inning for his only damage of the night. The right-hander was charged with three runs and eight hits over five innings of work. He struck out five in a 7-3 victory.

Davis has not made it out of the sixth inning in his last three starts. He is 1-1 with a whopping 8.21 ERA over that span. He is scheduled to make his next start Sunday at home against the Angels. He allowed four runs and nine hits over 5 1/3 innings of work in his previous start against the Angels on May 15.

News
It was inevitable, really. Having allowed only three home runs in his last seven starts after surrendering an MLB-leading 39 last year, the Royals' Ervin Santana had to have a start like he did Thursday, giving up four homers to the Angels.

Yet even with that sudden course correction, he still had halfway decent numbers, pitching beyond seven innings with a 1.04 WHIP and more than a strikeout per inning. Plus, now that he's on pace for a believable number of home runs -- more than usual, even, if you compare this year to his career norms and not the excessive 2012 -- he no longer has the sword of Damocles hanging over him. The disaster came, and it wasn't nearly as disastrous as most people thought it would be.

Long story short, you still have every reason to believe Santana is in the midst of a rebound season, and I wouldn't be afraid to activate him for a two-start Fantasy Week 9 (May 27-June 2).

News
A look at Eric Hosmer's batted-ball stats gives a pretty good indication why he has only one home run so far, and the good news is it's not because of diminished skills. He's simply not getting any elevation on the ball. His fly-ball rate of 19.5 percent is the third-lowest in all of baseball, behind only slap-it-and-run types Everth Cabrera and Elvis Andrus.

Of course, a relatively low fly-ball rate wouldn't be the worst thing for Hosmer's batting average, but this one is clearly doing him more harm than good.

That's not to say the Royals first baseman trying to hit the ball on the ground, but as often as he's doing it, I can't help but think his mechanics are off. In other words, his problem is correctable. It's just a matter of correcting it.

Practically speaking, none of this does any good for Hosmer owners at the moment, but if his back-to-back multi-hit games lead to a full-fledged hot streak, don't hesitate to buy into him again.

News
Royals starter Danny Duffy will throw 60 pitches Sunday at Double-A Northwest Arkansas in his first rehab start since Tommy John surgery last season, the Kansas City Star reports.

Duffy's return comes a bit earlier than expected, as the one-year anniversary of his surgery approaches June 13. The club was hoping for Duffy to go on a rehab assignment around that date, so his progress should be seen as positive. He will likely use most of the 30 days allowed for pitcher rehab assignments before he returns to the major leagues.

News
Even though he's no longer starting regularly in center field for the Royals, Lorenzo Cain's ownership and activation rates have remained steady. He's maintaining a .299 batting average and has produced six steals, so at least Rotisserie owners ostensibly have a reason to keep Cain in the lineup.

That could change, though. Cain has become prone to hitting grounders, turning 57 percent of his hit balls into worm-burners. With the relatively few flies he is hitting, Cain is batting .261, but unless he starts hitting with more home run power, that mark is likely to plummet.

Cain's appeal on Draft Day was the promise of speed and power, but he's looking like a poor bet to deliver on the latter, and he may also see his batting average dip. Even in Rotisserie leagues, at the very least, it's time to start hunting around for a replacement.

Royals starting pitcher James Shields owns a 2.47 ERA and 0.96 WHIP through 10 starts, but he has just two wins to show for his strong numbers.

Still, Shields is hardly discouraged by his lack of wins.

"We are going to get some wins," Shields said, per MLB.com. "I feel that is my job here is to get wins. It's just not happening right now. These guys are going to pick me up. These guys are great. They are grinding every day. We are going through a little struggle right now. Our heads are high, and we are staying positive. It's a long season. By no means are we out of it. We are going to keep putting in a good effort and grind it out."

Have you looked at Jeremy Guthrie's stats recently? Though clearly one of this season's biggest overachievers just a couple of starts ago, he now has a 3.49 ERA and 1.37 WHIP -- numbers that are well within the realm of possibility for Guthrie, judging by his earlier days with the Orioles.

Just like that, his numbers have corrected themselves. In fact, they might even be due for a correction the other way. Having surrendered seven home runs in his last three starts, he's on pace to give up 51 this season. Granted, he's no stranger to the long ball, but that's just ridiculous.

Taking the good with the bad, if you like what the Royals right-hander has delivered to date, you should stick with him in Fantasy. He has more good starts ahead, just like he has more bad starts ahead.
