Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain is nearing a rehab assignment after throwing a long-toss session Saturday, MLB.com reports.

"Everything's good," Chamberlain told MLB.com. "I'm just getting everything around it strong so we can get it done with and not let it linger. I'll continue to play long toss, throw a bullpen and get back going on rehab.

"To take a few extra days isn't the worst thing in the world," he said.

Chamberlain has a 3.86 ERA in 9 1/3 innings.

Yankees starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda turned in a stellar performance as he picked up his sixth win of the season Friday night against the Blue Jays.

Kuroda (6-2), who made his ninth start of the season, fired eight scoreless innings and surrendered just two hits. He struck out five and walked one in a 5-0 victory.

Kuroda has five starts with eight-plus scoreless innings since the start of the 2012 season. The only pitcher with more over that span is Felix Hernandez (eight). Kuroda is scheduled to make his next start Wednesday at Baltimore. He pitched a complete-game shutout in his previous meeting against the Orioles on April 14.

Girardi told reporters that the team has yet to issue a concrete timetable for Rodriguez's return. Rodriguez is not expected to return until after the All-Star break.

Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda (shoulder) will throw four innings and 50 pitches at the team's spring training complex on Friday, according to The Star Ledger.

Pineda will need to build up more arm strength before embarking on a minor-league rehab assignment. Pineda could last the maximum 30 days once he starts his assignment. The team has yet to issue a concrete timetable for the 24-year-old.

"I expect him to pitch for us," manager Joe Girardi said. "We've said [he’ll be back] sometime during the summer. I know summer starts officially in about a month. But sometime in the summer, we expect him."

News
Yankees outfielder Vernon Wells has experienced a season of firsts. A few weeks ago he played third base for the first time in his career and Wednesday against the Mariners he played second base for the first time.

Wells started at DH Wednesday, but when manager Joe Girardi needed a pitcher in the ninth inning of Wednesday's 12-2 loss, he turned to infielder Alberto Gonzalez to get the final out, which prompted Wells to come off the bench to play second base.

"We needed one out," Girardi told The Star-Ledger. "It’s not something I want to do. But for me to bring in another pitcher, it doesn’t make a ton of sense there. We’re down 10 runs, with three outs to go. They have a full bullpen, with their closer rested. I just figured, put him at second base."

News
Yankees closer Mariano Rivera was flattered when asked about an increasingly popular internet petition to get him to start the All-Star game, but told MLB.com Thursday he would prefer to stay in his comfort zone.

"It would mess up everything," said Rivera. "It would be the first time I've started, I think, since 1995. I don't think it would be right. I'd rather close the game than start the game."

Rivera, a 12-time All-Star, has converted all 16 of his save opportunities in the final season of his career. The 43-year-old veteran is MLB's all-time leader in saves (624) and games finished (910). Rivera would earn another spot on the national stage with an All-Star game appearance at Citi Field.

"I do respect everyone trying to do it," Rivera said. "But first of all, I have to be there first. Second of all, I don't start. That's not what I do. I know they want to honor me for my career, and I know it's here in New York. But the thing is, I wouldn't be comfortable making a start."

The Yankees have officially placed starter Andy Pettitte on the 15-day disabled list with a strained trapezius muscle.

Pettitte, who left Thursday's start against the Mariners, was pretty "spasm'd up," according to general manager Brian Cashman. Cashman also told reporters that his injury is considered "minor" and that the team was willing to make the "safe play" by taking a cautious approach with his injury.

The 40-year-old lefty went 4-3 with a 3.83 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP in eight starts before landing on the disabled list.

News
Yankees catcher Chris Stewart would be available Sunday against the Blue Jays in an emergency situation only, according to the Journal News and manager Joe Girardi.

Stewart, who tweaked his groin Thursday, won't be starting for at least a few more days.

"I have told him that tomorrow maybe we’ll start some tee and toss and see where he’s at in that situation, moving around," Girardi said. "He’s still a guy who I would not hesitate to put in there if I had to, but I figured if you can get one more day in a sense, where it gives you almost 36 hours, let’s take it, take advantage of it. I don’t know if he would play Tuesday, but I want to know that he’s better so we could make a decision. He does feel better; he told me."
