    News
Entering the ninth with a 3-0 lead against the Orioles Wednesday, Seattle closer David Aardsma blew just his second save in 19 chances. Melvin Mora doubled, Gregg Zaun walked and Oscar Salazar singled to load the bases. Felix Pie ran for Salazar. Adam Jones beat out a slow infield single to third to score Mora. Nick Markakis then hit a potential double-play ball to Jose Lopez, who dropped it. Zaun scored. Ty Wigginton followed with a two-run single to center for a 4-3 lead. Lopez also had a throwing error to first later in the inning, allowing Markakis to score. In all, Aardsma gave up five runs -- three earned -- on four hits and a walk and did not get anyone out. His ERA is 2.11 on the year.

    News
Mariners SP Jarrod Washburn continued his resurgent season with a one-hit shutout against the Orioles on Monday. He recorded three strikeouts and didn't issue a walk. He now has a 2.33 ERA over his last eight starts. Washburn, who was 5-14 with Seattle last year, said the biggest key to his success this season has been his two-seam fastball. He worked on it in spring training with pitching coach Rick Adair and bullpen coach John Wetteland. "I've always had a two-seam fastball but it's never sunk before," he said. "The mechanical adjustments we made in spring training -- Rick and Wette -- they made a little adjustment with me and it's paid off. That's what I owe it all to, that mechanical adjustment."

    News
Seattle 2B Jose Lopez had a great night at the plate on Wednesday against the Orioles. He was not very good in the field. Lopez made two costly errors in the ninth inning as Baltimore scored five runs in the inning to win the game. Prior to that, however, he had gone 2 for 4 with his 12th home run, a two-run shot, in the 1st inning. He added a double and scored twice in the game. His two RBI give him 50 on the season and his batting average is at .260.

    News
Seattle SP Jason M. Vargas did his best Cy Young impression on Wednesday against the Orioles. Vargas was nearly unhittable as he did not give up a run over five innings. His bullpen coughed up the lead and his victory, however, and he settled for a no decision in the Mariners loss. Vargas allowed only three base hits during the game but walked five and threw 97 pitches as the only thing he struggled on was command. Regardless, the Orioles hitters looked baffled against the starter, who struck out six and lowered his ERA to 3.82.
