News
Tampa Bay pitcher Matt Moore (1-3) allowed four runs -- one earned -- and four hits in 4 1/3 innings during the Rays' 5-3 loss at Baltimore on Saturday night. Moore failed to complete five innings for the second game in a row as he finished with six strikeouts and four walks. The rookie left-hander now owns a pedestrian 34-to-22 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 39 innings this season. "He wasn't sharp with his command, but we cost him 20 pitches that would have allowed him to get deeper into the game," Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said.

Foot - 15-day DL. Out until at least late June (Updated - 5/15/12)
News
Tampa Bay starting pitcher Jeff Niemann was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, a day after he suffered a fractured fibula. Rays manager Joe Maddon estimated he will be sidelined at least four to six weeks, perhaps longer. Niemann was injured when he was struck on the lower leg by a grounder during the first inning of Monday's game at Toronto. The right-hander recovered to make the out but walked gingerly around the mound and was checked by the trainer before finishing the inning. Niemann warmed up for the second but was unable to continue. "It's a tough break, literally," Maddon said. "The ball was not hit that sharply so I thought it just be like a stinger and he'd be able to walk it off."

News
Rays manager Joe Maddon told the Tampa Bay Times on Tuesday that Wade Davis will likely not replace Jeff Niemann in the rotation. Niemann suffered a fractured fibula Monday and is expected to miss four to six weeks. Chris Archer or Alex Cobb are expected to be recalled from Triple-A Durham to replace Niemann. "Part of it is I really like where he's at in the bullpen,'' Maddon said. "I think he's doing a great job and he's getting to the point where he and and his body are understanding it better, and his arm - to come back a little quicker, what it takes to get ready. I like him. I'm not afraid of him in a hot moment because he's been there before. He comes out there with the real slow pulse working, he's understanding what's going on, he gets a rigthy and a lefty out, he knows how to control the running game, he's a good fielder. He does a lot of things well. Plus, you're starting to see the 93-94(-mph fastball) again.''

Zobrist led off for the Rays as he went 3 for 4 with a walk and three RBI. Zobrist hit his fifth home run of the season and scored twice. He's batting just .217 for the Rays.

News
Tampa Bay starter James Shields certainly wasn't at his best on Sunday of Mother's Day in Baltimore. That said, Shields gave the Rays a gritty effort that helped them stop a losing streak and avoid being swept by the Orioles in the three-game series. Pitching without his best stuff, Shields managed to throw 104 pitches to go 6 1/3 innings in the win. Orioles starter Jake Arrieta gave up seven earned runs over the first four innings and Shields was able to hold on to that lead -- although that was questionable at one point. Shields left in the seventh inning just before Nick Markakis made things interesting with a two-run double. Shields, who also allowed a two-run homer to Matt Wieters in the sixth inning, gave up six runs -- four earned -- on seven hits and two walks over his 6 1/3 innings. He struck out five and his ERA is now at 3.52 on the year.

Rays infielder Sean Rodriguez returned to the starting lineup at third base Monday against the Blue Jays after sitting out a start Sunday because of chest soreness. Rodriguez did eventually make it into the lineup Sunday and played a few innings at third base. Rodriguez said Monday that the left side of his chest is "more sore" than it was Sunday, but he is going to push through the injury. “It’s about pain tolerance,” he said. Rodriguez showed his tolerance by going 2 for 4 at the plate with a double and two RBI Monday. He's batting .238 on the year.
