News
I have no idea what to make of Brandon Morrow's struggles this season, but that's partially because I still don't know what to make of him. He's had so many injuries and so much fluctuation with his strikeout rate over the years that I get the feeling we still haven't seen him in his truest, purest form.

We know the Blue Jays' right-hander has great stuff, and we've seen him put it to good use at times. But that stuff, while as good as ever, isn't getting the same results this year. And because he has never maintained his best self over a full season before, we can't assume he'll eventually come around.

Obviously, you can't start him right now, which is why I've dropped him to 46th in my starting pitcher rankings, but as much as you have invested in him and as good as you know he can be, I wouldn't recommend dropping him. You'd hate to have him rebound with ace numbers for somebody else.

News
Blue Jays starting pitcher Ramon Ortiz is no longer scheduled to start Sunday against the Orioles, as manager John Gibbons announced Thursday Chad Jenkins is slated to start Sunday. As for Ortiz, he's expected to be designated for assignment to clear a roster spot for Sean Nolin, who will be promoted to start Friday's game.

Ortiz is 1-2 with a 4.08 ERA through four outings (three starts). He lasted just 2 1/3 innings in his latest start Tuesday against the Rays.

The Blue Jays have placed lefty reliever Darren Oliver on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain, the club announced Friday.

Oliver, 42, accrued a 3.18 ERA and 1.8 K/BB over 17 innings in the Blue Jays' bullpen. Oliver's disabled list stint can be backdated to May 18, and he's eligible to return by June 2.

News
Former top prospect Brett Cecil never really found a groove as a starter for the Blue Jays,

In four seasons, he compiled a 4.79 ERA and 1.42 WHIP, with a K/9 of 6.5. In 2013, however, working exclusively out of the bullpen, Cecil has been golden, sporting a 2.35 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, and 9.4 K/9.

Cecil is throwing his fastball above his career rate (93 m.p.h. vs 90.5) and has lowered his walk rate significantly. While Casey Janssen has been great as the team's closer, he is coming back from shoulder surgery and admitted this week that his arm isn't exactly back to where it should be.

There's no indication that Janssen won't pitch the entire season, nor is there any guarantee that Cecil would get any save opportunities ahead of Steve Delabar or Esmil Rogers. But he has been dominant as a reliever and seems to be thriving in this new role. at the very least, AL-only owners may want to consider Cecil just for the low ratios and K potential he offers as a middle reliever. Anything else would just be gravy on top.

After the game, Lawrie told reporters, "I didn’t do anything. I didn’t say one word to him -- not one. Didn’t look at him one time, and I’m in trouble for that," according to the National Post.

Lawrie has hit .195/.257/.367 in 126 at-bats.

Janssen has allowed three earned runs on five hits and a walk in his last two appearances to raise his ERA to 2.40 from 0.69.

Over his first 24 games this year, the Blue Jays' Jose Bautista hit .207. Over his last 16 games, he's hitting .370.

Yet I'm sure if he gets off to another slow start next year, as he did this year and last year, we'll again hear tales of want and worry, of him wrecking one's draft and killing one's Fantasy team. Such is the nature of things.

Maybe hundreds of years from now, when mankind has taken on a reptilian form and migrated to the moon on unobtainium shuttles funded by the altruism of our utopian society, we'll have grown comfortable with the ways of Bautista and those like him. But by then, he'll have long retired, and those same fears will have manifested for the premier slugger of that time, Gjyek P'tan.

Such is the nature of things.

News
The Blue Jays' infatuation with Anthony Gose is noted in their many attempts to acquire him from the Phillies before ultimately acquiring him from the Astros, and by all accounts, he has backed up their enthusiasm, ranking among the top prospects in baseball leading up to his promotion last year.

So why oh why would they call him up as a defensive replacement and pinch runner, as manager John Gibbons suggested Monday? I get why they wouldn't want to throw him into the starting lineup. He was hitting only .227 at Triple-A Buffalo. But why call him up at all if they can't give him the at-bats to work through his struggles? Giving up on him as a long-term option because of a poor 40-game stretch at Triple-A would be ludicrous, especially since he nearly forced his way onto the big-league roster with his performance this spring.

My guess is that the Blue Jays called him up just so they could survive the next week or so without Rajai Davis. Once Davis returns, Gose will go back to Triple-A, where he might be only a hot streak away from unseating Colby Rasmus.

Blue Jays outfielder Colby Rasmus smacked his seventh home run Tuesday during a loss to the Rays. In fact, he scored two of the team's three runs in the loss.

Rasmus, batting seventh, went deep in the fifth inning off starter Alex Cobb. He finished 2 for 4 with two runs scored and is batting .234 on the year.

The 26-year-old Rasmus has really struggled in May and has dropped his batting almost 20 full points over his last 10 games. He does have seven homers and 19 RBI, however.
