Nationals starting pitcher Ross Detwiler underwent a second MRI Friday after suffering back spasms in Wednesday's start. Manager Davey Johnson told reporters Detwiler will not make his scheduled start Monday at San Francisco. The team has yet to release the results of his latest MRI, which could indicate if his injury will require a trip to the disabled list. The first test showed an "irregularity" in the right side of Detwiler’s back, Johnson told The Washington Post. Detwiler is 2-4 with a 2.76 ERA in eight starts for the Nationals.

The only two measurements that don't live up to last year's are win-loss record, which is out of hands, and strikeout rate, which doesn't signify much in and of itself, especially when it's a still-impressive 8.6 per nine innings. Maybe the first eight-inning outing of his career Thursday will turn the tides back in his favor. If not, I'm happy to buy low on him.

Nationals pitcher Zach Duke will move from the bullpen to the rotation Monday against the Giants, to replace Ross Detwiler for at least one turn. The team announced the move Saturday. Duke has an 8.40 ERA in 15 innings out of the bullpen this season and has not started since 2011, when he had a 5.47 ERA in nine starts for the Diamondbacks.

Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper was held out of Saturday's lineup against the Padres with a bruised left knee, according to The Washington Times. Harper told reporters he is sore from his recent collision with the outfield wall. MRI results on his abdomen came back clean. Harper could be held out as a precaution Sunday in order to return at full strength Monday at San Francisco. He is hitting .171 with two home runs and four RBI in 12 May games.

Nationals pitcher Jordan Zimmermann struck out six but suffered his second loss of the season Saturday night against the Padres. Zimmermann (7-2) allowed a solo home run to Yonder Alonso in the second. He gave up a run-scoring single to Everth Cabrera that broke a tie in the eighth. The right-hander was charged with two runs -- one earned -- and seven hits over eight innings of a 2-1 loss. Zimmermann has allowed no more than one earned run in four of his last five starts. Werth is seeing a specialist in Chicago to determine what is wrong with the hamstring. He has been out since May 2 with the injury, and this is the second specialist he is seeing this weekend.

With Ross Detwiler looking like a risk for his next scheduled start Monday against the Giants, Nationals manager Davey Johnson is reportedly leaning towards starting Craig Stammen in his place. The Washington Post reported Thursday that Stammen is most likely to get the starting nod if Detwiler has to sit. Zach Duke would also be considered for the start. Stamman has not started a game at the major-league level since 2010, but he does have a 2.33 ERA in 70 relief appearance over the last two seasons.
