Report: Braves' Manny Banuelos to make MLB debut Thursday
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

The Braves will wait until Wednesday to announce pitcher Manny Banuelos will start Thursday's game against the Nationals, according to MLB.com. It would be his MLB debut.

Banuelos, who was acquired in a January trade with the Yankees, has been a standout arm for Triple-A Gwinnett in 2015. He is 6-2 with a 2.29 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 15 starts. He has 69 strikeouts and 38 walks in 82 2/3 innings.

The 24-year-old left-hander was considered a top-100 prospect in 2011 and 2012.

Braves' Freddie Freeman won't be ready to come off DL Friday
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman (wrist) will not be ready to come off the 15-day disabled list when eligible Friday, manager Fredi Gonzalez told reporters Tuesday.

Gonzalez said Freeman's wrist is not improving and the team is trying some other therapy to help with the recovery.

The Braves are still hopeful Freeman will return before the All-Star break.

Braves RF Nick Markakis still powerless, but still consistent
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Braves right fielder Nick Markakis has neither scored nor driven in a lot of runs this season, but he has proven remarkably consistent.

Markakis has only suffered through one three-game hitless streak this year - and that was the first three days of May. He has three hits in his last eight at-bats after two straight hitless games.

One issue for Markakis has been the lack of extra-base hits. He has two doubles, no triples and no homers since June 3 and is homerless on the year after blasting at least 10 in each of his previous nine seasons.

Braves' Eury Perez OK after colliding with Cameron Maybin in outfield
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Braves outfielder Eury Perez checked out OK after colliding with Cameron Maybin in the outfield in the bottom of the ninth Sunday against the Pirates, per MLB.com.

Maybin was fine after the collision, but Perez was down on the warning track for a few minutes holding his torso before leaving the game under his own power. However, Perez's stomach and ribs checked out without injury upon further evaluation.

"I was a little nervous. I thought we were going to lose two players out there," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "We dodged a bullet there."

Perez, who entered the game in left field in the eighth inning as a defensive substitution, said through a translator he didn't hear anyone else calling for the fly ball. But he knew after the play he wasn't seriously hurt.

"We're playing for each other. We've got each others' backs and going hard," said Jason Grilli, who was pitching at the time of the collision. "I'm glad everyone is OK. That's the most important thing."

Braves' Alex Wood on win vs. Pirates: 'My best start of year'
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Braves starting pitcher Alex Wood has spent several weeks making adjustments to his pitching mechanics in order to find the form that made him a successful starter in 2014. Wood admits he might have finally found that form after throwing 7 1/3 scoreless innings during Sunday's 2-1 win against the Pirates.

"This is my best [start] of the year for sure, just in terms of my fastball command, being able to move it in and out," Wood said, per MLB.com. "Today is how I felt during that long stretch that I put together last year. Hopefully, it will carry over the rest of the year."

Wood tied a season-high with eight strikeouts, while allowing five hits and no walks.

"He was pretty much in control the whole game," Braves catcher A.J. Pierzynski said. "He had all three of his pitches working and he was moving his fastball around. He was ahead in the count. That's what he can do. When he's right, he can dominate lineups. Today you saw a glimpse of what he can do.

"He threw a lot of fastballs in to a lot of their right-handed hitters that backed them up and made them respect both sides of the plate. He had a lot of strikeouts, especially looking at fastballs that were in on the plate because they were looking out over [the plate]."
