Chris Johnson slugs two home runs in win Saturday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Braves third baseman Chris Johnson went 2 for 5 with two home runs and four RBI in his team's 11-6 win over the Cubs Saturday.

Johnson hit just one home run each in April, May and June, but he was able to knock two in a single game in July before reaching the All-Star break. He tied the game 2-2 with a two-run shot in the second inning and broke a 3-3 tie with another two-run blast in the fourth. Johnson has hit .272/.294/.365 with five home runs and 33 RBI in 353 at-bats.

Mike Minor surrenders six runs in win vs. Cubs
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Braves pitcher Mike Minor picked up a win Saturday despite allowing six earned runs on 11 hits and one walk in five innings while striking out five in his team's 11-6 victory over the Cubs.

Minor (3-5) gave up six runs or more for the first time since June 10, but that didn't stop him from getting his first win since May 19. He contributed to the team's offensive explosions with a solo home run in the fourth inning. Minor owns a 4.86 ERA and 79:24 K:BB ratio in 83 1/3 innings heading into the All-Star break.

Evan Gattis takes batting practice
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Braves catcher Evan Gattis felt good enough after taking some swings Friday that he participated in batting practice before Class A Rome's game Friday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

"He’ll do the same (workout) today, and then just keep ramping him up that way," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said Saturday morning. "(Rome) doesn’t play Monday; they play Tuesday. But we haven’t talked about any of that (rehab assignment) stuff yet. Maybe he comes in today and it’s gotten a little sore and (he says) I don’t want to do all that stuff. But I think it was encouraging what he was able to do (Friday)."

Gattis was placed on the disabled list in late June with a bulging disk in his back. If he continues to progress, he could be ready to join the Braves soon after the All-Star break.

Alex Wood picks up no decision after tough start
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com

Braves pitcher Alex Wood had a rough start against the Cubs Friday.

Wood gave up four runs on five hits over 5 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out six during the outing. Wood cruised through his first two innings of work, putting the Cubs down in order. The third inning brought some complications. After putting the first two men on, Wood gave up a sacrifice fly and an RBI single, giving the Cubs a 2-0 lead.

The Braves would come back to tie the game while Wood tossed up two more scoreless innings. Things then unraveled in the sixth. Wood again put the first two batters on base before hitting Welington Castillo with a pitch. With the bases loaded, Chris Coghlan singled in a run, chasing Wood from the game. Shae Simmons came on in relief, and allowed one run, which was charged to Wood.

Wood was set to lose the game, but the Braves mounted a comeback in the ninth inning. His next start will come after the All-Star break.
