The Astros have acquired right-hander Charles Basford from the Yankees in exchange for outfielder Fernando Martinez, according to the team's official website.

Basford was drafted in the 37th round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Samford University. He has allowed just one run in two innings of relief for Class A Staten Island, a short-season affiliate in the New York-Penn League.

Astros manager Bo Porter said Tuesday reliever Edgar Gonzalez (shoulder) will begin his minor-league rehab assignment Friday with the Gulf Coast League affiliate, according to the team's color analyst. Barring any setbacks, he will be moved to Double-A Corpus Christi for his second appearance.

The Astros optioned Jimmy Paredes to Triple-A Oklahoma City Monday after a loss to Chicago. Paredes was optioned to make room for the activation of Justin Maxwell from the disabled list, the Houston Chronicle reports.

Paredes has been mired in a bad slump and has recorded just one hit in his last 21 at-bats in June.

Maxwell, who has been out since April 23 with a fractured left hand, is expected to play right field in his return in Tuesday's game against Milwaukee.

Astros outfielder Brandon Barnes had a three-hit night in a 4-2 loss to Chicago Monday. Barnes went 3 for 5 with a run scored. 

All three of his hits were singles and he turned that into two stolen bases. Barnes now has six steals on the season. He is batting .284. 

The 27-year-old has gone 5 for 12 over his last three games. He's been caught stealing five times.
