Yost: Ben Zobrist to soon start at 2B over Omar Infante for Royals
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

It appears all but certain that light-hitting Omar Infante will be the odd man out of the Royals lineup when Alex Gordon returns from injury.

As expected, Ned Yost has stated that Ben Zobrist will play mostly second base when Gordon is ready, per the Kansas City Star.

Infante has not found his stride at the plate all season. The result is a .217 average, which if maintained would be the lowest of his career.

The versatile Zobrist, who can play all over the field, will likely continue to give others occasional days off as the Royals cruise to the division title.

Royals SP Yordano Ventura powers past Orioles
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

It took about four months, but Royals flamethrower Yordano Ventura has finally found himself on the mound. The Orioles paid for it Thursday.

Ventura was dealing. He racked up a career-high 11 strikeouts in six shutout innings. He allowed just two hits and walked four in raising his record to 9-7.

He walked two and struck out the side in the first, then really settled down. He retired seven in a row at one point and 10 of the last 12 batters he faced.

Ventura has given up just three runs over his last 25 innings and has won his last five decisions. His ERA has shrunk to 4.41, its lowest point since May 31.

Royals' Wade Davis gets save Tuesday with Greg Holland out
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

Royals reliever Wade Davis picked up his 12th save of the season in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Orioles. Davis made quick work of the Orioles in the ninth inning, needing just 13 pitches to retire the side in order.

Davis was pitching in place of regular closer Greg Holland, who is dealing with a sore arm. Manager Ned Yost indicated that Holland should be available for Wednesday's game, according to the Kansas City Star

Royals SP Danny Duffy keeps Orioles in check in victory Tuesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

Royals pitcher Danny Duffy missed a quality start by one out on Tuesday, but he still picked up his seventh win of the season in the 3-2 victory over the Orioles. Duffy went 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits. He walked two and struck out five, throwing 59 of his 91 pitches for strikes.

Duffy (7-6, 4.13 ERA) allowed both of his runs to score in the fourth inning, thanks to a pair of RBI singles.

The left-hander is now 3-1 with a 3.67 ERA over his last five outings.

Royals SP Kris Medlen rewarded with win in first start since 2013
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Royals comeback kid Kris Medlen pitched well Monday in his first start since Tommy John surgery. He even got a bonus.

The bonus was a victory, courtesy of a huge offensive explosion after he had thrown his last pitch. Medlen allowed three runs on five hits in six innings with no walks and six strikeouts.

Such a result did not appear likely after he surrendered a two-run homer to Adam Jones in the first, but he settled down thereafter and retired the last seven batters he faced.

Medlen had tossed 11 consecutive shutout innings heading into the outing.
