Dodgers' Enrique Hernandez: Slated for bench role
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Hernandez is slated for a bench role after the acquisition of Logan Forsythe from Tampa Bay.

He seemingly had a chance to to start at second base prior to the move, but it was widely anticipated that the Dodgers would upgrade that position, and that indeed happened. Hernandez will have to earn a utility role this spring and will face competition in the outfield (Franklin Gutierrez, Andrew Toles, Andre Ethier, Scott Van Slyke, Trayce Thompson) and to a lesser extent in the infield (Chase Utley, Rob Segedin, Chris Taylor). The Dodgers will likely keep both Utley and Hernandez as utility infielders with the latter getting occasional starts in the outfield against left-handed pitching.

Dodgers' Colt Hynes: Reunites with Dodgers on minor league deal
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Hynes agreed to a minor league contract with the Dodgers on Monday, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.

The 31-year-old spent time with three different organizations in 2016, although he found relatively little success at the higher levels of the minor leagues. Hynes does possess a bit of major league experience, but he seems to be lined up for little more than an organizational depth role during his second stint with the organization.

Dodgers' Tim Shibuya: Returns to Dodgers on minors deal
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Shibuya re-signed with the Dodgers on a minor league contract, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.

The 27-year-old signed with the Dodgers in April last season, and despite some struggles at the Triple-A level, he proved to be a serviceable starter at the lower levels of the minor leagues. However, given his middling track record and inability to get outs against advanced hitters, Shibuya seems destined for an organizational depth role.

Dodgers' Scott Kazmir: Throws productive batting practice session
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Kazmir (ribs) threw a 25-pitch batting practice session on Sunday and showed no signs of injury, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.

This is an encouraging report from Dodgers' camp, as Kazmir's 2016 season ended prematurely due to intercostal spasms. It sounds like he's progressed well since then. If healthy, the 33-year-old could occupy the team's No. 5 spot in the starting rotation to start the season.

Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw: Named Opening Day starter
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Kershaw was named the Dodgers' Opening Day starter on Saturday, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.

Per Gurnick, this marks Kershaw's seventh Opening Day start. While it's not a surprising announcement, it's noteworthy in the sense that manager Dave Roberts clearly has full confidence in the health of his ace's back. His back injury last season cost him several starts, but he still managed to post a 1.69 ERA with a 0.72 WHIP over 21 starts in 2016.
