Brewers send LF Gerardo Parra to Orioles for SP Zach Davies
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

The Brewers have traded left fielder Gerardo Parra to the Orioles for highly touted pitching prospect Zach Davies, per CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman. Only successful physicals are holding up its completion.

It was thought at one time that Baltimore would need to give up more to land Parra, who is on a 13-game hitting streak and has sweetened his slash line on the year to .326/.369/.517.

Davies has progressed through the system every year. He is enjoying arguably his finest season at Triple-A Norfolk with a 2.84 ERA and 81 strikeouts in 101 1/3 innings.

Brewers waste seven shutout innings by Jimmy Nelson on Thursday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

Brewers right-hander Jimmy Nelson had a strong outing against the Cubs on Thursday. The youngster fired seven shutout innnings, allowing just two hits and three walks with eight strikeouts. He threw 104 pitches on the evening.

Despite the brilliant effort, Nelson was left with a no-decision after the bullpen allowed the Cubs to score five runs over the final two innings in the 5-2 Cubs' win.

Nelson had a strong month of July, going 3-1 with a 1.64 ERA in five starts.

Brewers recall Logan Schafer, Elian Herrera from Triple-A
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

The Brewers have recalled outfielder Logan Schafer and infielder/outfielder Elian Herrera from Triple-A on Thursday.

Schaefer, who made the Brewers out of spring training, has not appeared in a game for the big club since being sent down in early May. He was 6 for 33 prior to his demotion.

Herrera has had 99 at-bats with the Brewers this year. He had a productive stretch in mid-May, when he homered in three consecutive games. Overall, he's batting .212 with four longballs. He has been down in the minors since early June.

The moves come hours after the Brewers traded away Carlos Gomez to the Astros earlier in the day.

Astros acquire Carlos Gomez, Mike Fiers from Brewers
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

The Astros and the Brewers have struck a deal that would send center fielder Carlos Gomez and starter Mike Fiers to Houston, CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reports. The Brewers are expected to get several prospects back in the deal, Heyman adds.

Gomez was nearly dealt to the Mets on Wednesday, but the trade fell through after the Mets backed out due to medical concerns. Gomez's addition to the Astros will give Houston a very solid outfield and lineup down the stretch.

Fiers has been solid for the Brewers this year, posting a 3.89 ERA in 21 starts. He will solidify an already deep rotation for the Astros.

The Brewers will reportedly receive Domingo Santana, Brett Phillips, Josh Hader and Adrian Houser, according to FoxSports.com.

Neither the Brewers nor the Astros have officially announced the deal.

Report: Mets' concerns over Carlos Gomez's medicals nixes trade
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

The Mets have reportedly backed out of a deal that would have sent Carlos Gomez to the New York from the Brewers

Sources tell FoxSports.com that the Mets had concerns over Gomez's medical records, and decided not to follow through on the proposed deal, which would have sent Wilmer Flores and Zack Wheeler to Milwaukee.

Gomez spent time on the disabled list earlier this season with a hip injury, but he has played all but one game since June 23. However, it seems the Mets' staff did not like what they saw in the medical report.

There had been thought that the Brewers saw something in Wheeler's medical charts, as he had Tommy John surgery in March. But reports are saying it's Gomez's injury history that has nixed the deal.
