Brewers' Jimmy Nelson working on mixing curveball into repertoire
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Brewers starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson (hamstring) impressed manager Ron Roenicke as he threw batting practice Friday, per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

“The last two times I’ve seen him throw, I really liked it. Just better command with his stuff,” Roenicke. "We’re trying to simplify things for him a little bit.

“First, we have to get him locked in with his fastball, get it over the plate, down, so he can attack hitters with it. He has come up with a curveball this year and I like it. It’s a nice curveball. With all of his pitches, I’m liking what I’m seeing.”

Nelson relied primarily on his fastball and sinker last season. He did throw a changeup, but he didn't throw it much. With the addition of a curveball, the Brewers are hoping it will aid his other pitches.

“He throws a changeup but he’s thinking this will help,” Roenicke said. “He’s still working on his changeup and he’ll see which one comes out better.

“He’ll throw all four (pitches). I don’t think he’ll get rid of one. But in different games you go sometimes with a different offspeed, depending on which is working better that day.”

Brewers Scooter Gennett looking to prove himself
by Dave Peters | CBSSports.com

Brewers second baseman Scooter Gennett knows that he must improve against left-handed pitching, per the team's official website.

"I'm very eager," said Gennett. "For me, I'm not eager about showing or proving [that I can hit lefties], but just for myself, being able to play and have fun every day and get in there every day and crack lefties. That's part of the game -- you don't want to [sit] out. It's back to what I'm used to, and I'm really looking forward to it."

He didn't face one left-handed starting pitcher last year.  When batting against southpaw relievers in 2014, he went 4-for-39.  Gennett is 10-for-78 against lefties.

Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said this about Gennett's struggles.

"For me, you can't hit lefties unless you can get hit by them," Gennett said, "which means, if there's a guy throwing 97 [mph] and slinging it in there, the only way I'm going to hit him is if I stand in there willing to stay in there and wear one in the neck or the shoulder or the ribs. That's what you have to do to hit lefties. So that's the one thing I worry about -- don't be a scaredy cat and get out of the way, and I'll be all right."

Gennett, 24, has a career batting average of .300 going into his third season with the Brewers.

Brewers' Garza: 'I had a new fire awaken in me this offseason'
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Brewers pitcher Matt Garza indicated Thursday that the "growing pains" of joining a new organization are gone in his second spring with the team, MLB.com reports.

"I think my world is settled, and it helps a lot," Garza said. "Last year I was still in a transitional period with taking care of the family, moving them around, and we made the decision to stay home [in California]. We bought a new place back home and set up shop, and now that huge world is in place. Everything else is fine. Financial security, job security. All I have to do is go play, and it's fun.

"I had a new fire awaken in me this offseason, which I haven't had in a while. The past couple years have kind of led me down that road. It's my fault, nobody else's. But things happen for a reason, and I think I found my reason."

Garza delivered his eighth straight season with an ERA under 4.00 in 2014, going 8-8 with a 3.64 ERA and 126:50 K:BB ratio in 163 1/3 innings.

Report: Details finalized in new deal between Brewers and K-Rod
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com

The Brewers and pitcher Francisco Rodriguez have hashed out the necessary details on his new contract, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

However, Rodriguez has to pass a physical for the deal to become official. It was previously reported that Rodriguez agreed to a two-year, $13 million deal that includes a club option for the 2017 season.

With the new contract in place, the process for Rodriguez to obtain a work visa from Venezuela has begun.

Nicknamed K-Rod, the 33-year-old closer reunites with the team he played for from 2011-2013.

Brewers' Jim Henderson returns to action with strong game
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com

Brewers reliever Jim Henderson turned in a strong inning of work on Wednesday.

Henderson, who missed the second half of last season due to shoulder surgery, got in his first game action in months. He pitched a scoreless inning, striking out two during the appearance. Henderson did allow one walk.

Following the game, Henderson said he was glad to be back out there. "It felt great to have that umpire back there and a hitter in there," Henderson said. "I think I threw two balls in a row and had to remind myself, 'Just treat it like a live BP type of thing and just focus on the glove.' That's was all I was concerned about."

The 32-year-old Henderson posted a 7.15 ERA over 11 1/3 innings before being shut down last year. He's expected to open the season in Milwaukee's bullpen.
