Brewers SP Jimmy Nelson throws five innings in loss Friday
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com

Brewers pitcher Jimmy Nelson threw five innings and gave up two earned runs during Friday's 6-3 loss to the Pirates.

"I felt like I was able to get more ground balls this outing than last outing, although overall I wasn't quite as sharp," Nelson said, per MLB.com "But you're not going to be sharp every time out."

Nelson surrendered five hits, but he did not walk a batter and he struck out three. The two runs were the first runs he's given up this year. His ERA raised to 1.50 and he is now 1-1 on the season.

"I know this team has good character. I know we're going to respond to this and learn from it," Nelson said.

His next expected start will be Wednesday against the Reds.

Brewers place OF Carlos Gomez on DL; recall Jason Rogers
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

The Brewers officially placed outfielder Carlos Gomez on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 16 due to a right hamstring strain, according to the team's official website. Milwaukee recalled infielder/outfielder Jason Rogers from Triple-A Colorado Springs to take Gomez's spot on the roster.

Gomez returned to Milwaukee on Thursday to receive further examination and a cortisone injection. Gomez batted .235 (8 for 34) with one home run, four doubles and six RBI in eight games before the injury. The Brewers will likely use Gerardo Parra as the team's regular center fielder until Gomez is ready to return.

Brewers to place Carlos Gomez (hamstring) on 15-day DL
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

The Brewers will place outfielder Carlos Gomez on the 15-day disabled list due to a hamstring injury, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Tests have found that Gomez has a small "defect," or tear, in his hamstring. He has received a cortisone shot and will not be eligible to return until the end of April. The Brewers will likely use Gerardo Parra as the team's regular center fielder until Gomez is ready to return.

"When you talk about a leadoff guy who can do what he can do, and in center field, it's concerning," manager Ron Roenicke said Thursday. "We know offensively we need to get things going and we're losing a guy who has a chance to do a ton for you. When you lose Carlos, you lose a piece that's got a chance to really get things going."

Brewers SP Mike Fiers drops to 0-2
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Brewers starting pitcher Mike Fiers couldn't outduel Cardinals starting pitcher John Lackey during a 4-0 loss Thursday.

Fiers (0-2) pitched well for the most part, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk in 5 2/3 innings. He had four strikeouts. But Lackey was just that much better, striking out eight in seven scoreless innings.

The game was scoreless until Matt Holliday had a one-out RBI single in the sixth inning. Fiers was chased from the game on Matt Reynolds' two-out RBI double in the sixth.

Fiers will be looking for his first win when he returns to the mound Tuesday against the Reds.
