Twins' Byungho Park: Two hits in spring debut
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Park went 2-for-2 in his spring training debut Friday as the DH in Minnesota's 3-1 loss to Tampa Bay.

Park was designated for assignment in February, but no other team claimed him and he was outrighted to Triple-A Rochester. However, he's in big league camp and has a chance to win the DH job over Kennys Vargas.

Twins' Mason Melotakis: Improved, but not yet throwing
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Melotakis (oblique) has shown improvement, but is not yet throwing, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

The 25-year-old was held out of pitching activities this week, a trend which could continue in the coming days. Melotakis is competing for a spot in the Twins' bullpen after registering a 2.97 ERA and a 42:12 K:BB ratio last season with Double-A Chattanooga.

Twins' Robbie Grossman: Leading candidate to win reserve role
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Grossman is the leading candidate to win a reserve outfielder role this spring, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. He'll compete with Zach Granite, Daniel Palka, Drew Stubbs and J.B. Shuck.

Grossman will most likely begin the season as the fourth outfiedler, but it's possible he could win the DH job or platoon in left field with Eddie Rosario. Grossman had the most productive offensive season of his big league career last year (.280/.386/.443), so it would be an upset if he didn't make the final 25-man roster. His only worry would be if the Twins decided to keep a better outfielder on he bench for his glove, as Grossman was a poor fielder by most advanced metrics.

Twins' John Ryan Murphy: Competing for backup catcher role
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Murphy will compete with Chris Gimenez and Mitch Garver for the backup catcher job behind Jason Castro, ESPN 1500 am Twin Cities reports.

Murphy won the backup role last year in spring training but then went 3-for-40 at the plate and was quickly demoted to Triple-A Rochester. He didn't fare much better in the minors as he hit just three home runs with a .609 OPS. He'll get a fresh start this spring, but he's likely behind Gimenez with Garver being a long shot.

Twins' Adalberto Mejia: Begins spring in fifth starter competition
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mejia will be in the competition for Minnesota's fifth starter role this spring, ESPN 1500 am Twin Cities reports.

Mejia will compete with Jose Berrios, Tyler Duffey, Trevor May, Justin Haley, Ryan Vogelsong and Nick Tepesch for the final spot in the rotation. Mejia is a long shot and will likely begin the season at Triple-A. Mejia improved significantly in his second season at Double-A Richmond last year with a 3.94 ERA and 58:16 K:BB in 65 innings. He then saw his strikeouts climb to 9.6 K/9 at Triple-A Sacramento, although he had a 4.20 ERA. He'll likely get a crack at the big league rotation at some point this summer if he begins the season at Triple-A.
