Twins reliever Tim Wood,  who is on the 15-day disabled list, was diagnosed with rotator cuff inflammation and biceps tendinitis, assistant general manager Rob Antony told MLB.com Sunday. Wood is expected to start another rehab assignment in 10 days. 

Twins pitcher Pedro Hernandez suffered his first loss of the season in Sunday's 5-1 defeat to the Red Sox.

Hernandez (2-1), who made his sixth start of the season, surrendered a solo home run to Will Middlebrooks in the second. He was charged with three runs and nine hits over 4 1/3 innings of work. He struck out two and walked one as he saw his ERA rise from 5.79 to 5.85.

Hernandez is scheduled to make his next start Friday at Detroit. He has a whopping 10.22 ERA in three starts away from Target Field.

Twins catcher Joe Mauer returned from back stiffness to go 2 for 5 with a double and a run as the the designated hitter in a 12-6 loss to the Red Sox Saturday.

The two-hit performance extends Mauer's hitting streak to 15 games and raises his season line to .351/.430/.503 in 172 plate appearances.

Twins starting pitcher Scott Diamond surrendered six runs against the Red Sox Saturday en route to his fourth loss of the season. He allowed eight hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings with a strike out.

It was Diamond's second-straight six-run outing, pushing his ERA from 3.03 to 4.99 over his last 10 innings. He'll face the Tigers Thursday.

Twins pitcher Cole De Vries was activated from the 15-day disabled list Saturday and optioned to Triple-A Rochester after making three rehab starts, MLB.com reports.

"It was a positive because he didn't have any setbacks," assistant general manager Rob Antony told MLB.com. "He worked hard to come back healthy. Right now, we just don't think he's ready to help us, but he's healthy, so we didn't want to keep him on the DL so we optioned him. I think he understood and everything is fine."

De Vries gave up six runs on 11 hits in four innings in his last rehab appearance before being activated.
