Tommy Milone fails to go five innings
by Chris Cwik |

Twins pitcher Tommy Milone can’t go five innings Friday against the Tigers.

Milone allowed five runs, three earned, on 10 hits over 4 1/3 innings. He struck out three and did not issue any walks during the outing. Milone got himself in trouble early, giving up a solo home run in the first inning. He tossed three scoreless innings before running into trouble in the fifth. Milone recorded an out against the first batter he faced. The second batter, Torii Hunter, managed to reach on an error. At that point, Milone fell apart. He gave up three singles and a double to the next four batters before being pulled from the game. Another run would come around to score on a sac fly, and was charged to Milone.

Milone didn’t last five innings, so he was not eligible for the win. He’ll take on the Royals in his next start.

Kennys Vargas' stock going up
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer

I've got to hand it to Al Melchior: His predictions this year have been spot-on.

To say I didn't like Kennys Vargas would be inaccurate. Back on Aug. 5, I touted him under the headline "Kennys Vargas could surprise people." But I wasn't willing to endorse him over Kendrys Morales and Steve Pearce, as Al did Thursday morning on the Fantasy Baseball Today podcast.

So of course that afternoon, Vargas goes 3 for 4 with a homer. The timing is incredible.

I'm still not willing to endorse him over Morales, who has a steady track record, or Pearce, who Baseball Insider Jon Heyman spoke enthusiastically about on Thursday's Fantasy Baseball Today, but he's now officially surprised people. No "could" about it.

Given his strikeout rate, his batting average could be in for a steep regression, but I think Vargas deserves at least as much hype as C.J. Cron got earlier this season. His ownership rate reached 56 percent at one point. Vargas' is currently 35.

Kennys Vargas goes deep Thursday
by Chris Cwik |

Twins designated hitter Kennys Vargas went yard Thursday against the Indians.

Vargas struck in the bottom of the fourth inning. He took a 93 mph sinker from Corey Kluber out to left for a solo shot. Vargas would also double and single during the outing. He finished 3 for 4, with two runs scored and one RBI.

Glen Perkins picks up save No. 32
by Chris Cwik |

Twins pitcher Glen Perkins saved his 32nd game Thursday against the Indians.

Perkins entered with a three-run lead and shut the door quickly. He tossed a perfect inning of work against Cleveland. Perkins struck out one batter during the outing. The save puts Perkins just four away from his career-high of 36 saves from last season. Perkins has a 2.48 ERA.

Phil Hughes wins fourth straight
by Chris Towers |

Twins pitcher Phil Hughes twirled yet another gem Thursday, in a 4-1 win over the Indians, his fourth straight.

Hughes allowed just one run for the fourth start in a row, while completing seven full innings yet again. He scattered five hits without walking a batter, and struck out eight over 97 pitches for the win.

Hughes improved his record to 14-8 with the win, while lowering his ERA to 3.65. He will try to stretch his winning streak to five starts when he takes on the Royals Wednesday.
