Phillies' Jeanmar Gomez: Will open season as closer
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Gomez will open the season as the Phillies' closer, CSN Philadelphia's Jim Salisbury reports.

This comes as no surprise, since manager Pete Mackanin had maintained at various times throughout spring training that Gomez was his closer at the moment. The announcement was more of a formality, and officially confirmed the closing role is his to start the season. Gomez fought off Joaquin Benoit and Hector Neris for the job, as the 29-year-old allowed one run in 9.2 innings this spring. The right-hander converted 37 of his 43 save chances last season for Philadelphia.

Phillies' Tyler Goeddel: Designated for assignment
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Goeddel was designated for assignment by the Phillies on Thursday, Matt Gelb of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

The move was made to clear room on the 40-man roster for Brock Stassi, who made the Phillies' Opening Day roster on Thursday. Goeddel slashed just .192/.258/.291 in 213 at-bats with the Phillies in 2016.

Phillies' Daniel Nava: Claims Opening Day roster spot
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Nava has earned a spot on the Phillies' Opening Day roster, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports.

Nava, who signed on a minor-league deal with the Phillies in the offseason, mashed his way onto the Opening Day roster with a triple-slash of .362/.455/.489 across 47 at-bats, beating out Jesmuel Valentin for the final bench spot. He'll provide veteran depth around the outfield, though he won't carry much fantasy value at all.

Phillies' Jesmuel Valentin: Won't make Opening Day roster
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Valentin did not make the Phillies' 25-man roster and will instead report to Triple-A, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports.

Valentin was battling with Daniel Nava and Brock Stassi for the Phillies' final two bench spots. Although the 23-year-old performed well this spring (.366/.422/.512 in 41 at-bats), Nava and Stassi both hit north of .300 and carried an OPS higher than 1.000, so the Phillies opted to go with the more seasoned pair. Valentin will start the season off at Triple-A where he'll continue to work for a call-up.

Phillies' Brock Stassi: Makes Opening Day roster
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stassi has earned a spot on the Phillies' Opening Day roster, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports.

Stassi was competing with Jesmuel Valentin and Daniel Nava for the Phillies' final two bench spots. The 27-year-old went 19-for-59 (.339) with six taters and 17 RBI this spring, solidifying himself a spot on the 25-man roster to open the season.
