Pirates' Mark Melancon: Notches 29th save in Saturday win
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Melancon notched his 29th save with a scoreless ninth inning in Saturday's 7-4 victory over the Phillies. He struck out two.

The veteran closer has bounced back nicely from a pair of consecutive blown saves earlier in July, now having converted back-to-back save opportunities on the strength of two scoreless outings. Melancon is having a solid July despite the earlier hiccups, converting five of seven save chances and also recording a victory.

Pirates' Tyler Glasnow: Leaves Saturday with shoulder injury
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Glasnow left Saturday's game in the fourth inning with right shoulder discomfort.

He was erratic when on the mound, walking three batters and hitting two others with just 42 of his 78 pitches going for strikes. The Pirates figure to put Glasnow through a battery of tests to determine the full extent of the issue, as they won't want to take any chances with one of their top prospects. Ryan Vogelsong (eye) could be ready to fill a rotation spot soon.

Pirates' Tyler Glasnow: Leaves Saturday with apparent injury
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Glasnow left Saturday's game against the Phillies with an apparent injury, Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

It wasn't obvious what exactly was ailing Glasnow, but he appeared to be favoring his back or side after delivering a pitch to Peter Bourjos in the fourth inning. Glasnow was likely headed back to Triple-A Indianapolis anyway, as he struggled both with his command and in controlling the run game (five stolen bases allowed) in his three-plus innings, and Ryan Vogelsong (eye) is expected to slot into the rotation in the near future.

Pirates' Gerrit Cole: Takes loss despite quality start Friday
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Cole (5-6) gave up an earned run on six hits and a walk over six innings in Friday's 4-0 loss to the Phillies. He struck out seven.

He looked considerably better than in his first start off the DL last Saturday versus the Nationals, notching first-pitch strikes on 18 of the 26 hitters he faced and inducing 14 swinging strikes overall. Cole also stayed away from the long ball once again, marking his sixth consecutive appearance without surrendering a round-tripper. The 25-year-old will look for some run support, and his first victory since May 20, when he takes on the Brewers next Friday.

Pirates' Ryan Vogelsong: Will play catch Saturday
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Vogelsong (eye) will play catch today after being pulled from Wednesday's rehab outing, Stephen J. Nesbitt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Vogelsong left Wednesday's Triple-A rehab outing after four innings because of neck soreness, completely unrelated to the eye injury that's kept him out of action since May. He was expected to come off the DL on Saturday, but because of his neck issue, he'll be sidelined a few more days as he works out the kinks. If all goes well when he plays catch, he'll likely not require another rehab outing and could be activated early next week.
