Padres' Austin Hedges: Not in Thursday's lineup
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Hedges is not in the starting lineup Thursday against the Dodgers.

The 24-year-old was called up last Wednesday and had started five of the six games for which he's been with the club. Tonight, he'll give way to Derek Norris, who's hitting sixth. Known primarily as a defense-first prospect before this year, Hedges enjoyed a smashing season at Triple-A El Paso (.326/.353/.597, with 21 home runs in 334 plate appearances). Catchers often take a bit longer to grow into their hitting tools as they progress through a system, and even during their big-league career. He can contribute some last-ditch counting stats if you're struggling at the end of this season. Hedges also now boasts an intriguing package that could vault him into the Pads' starting backstop role -- and starting consideration in two-catcher fantasy leagues -- out of the gate next season.

Padres' Travis Jankowski: Absent from Thursday's lineup
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Jankowski is not in the starting lineup Thursday against the Dodgers.

This is not surprising, considering he's been used often in platoon duty. He boasts a .275/.370/.360 line against right-handers this year compared to a meager .155/.220/.179 against lefties. A matchup with expected Diamondbacks right-hander Braden Shipley may prompt San Diego to start Jankowski in Friday's series opener. Jon Jay will bat second and play left field Thursday.

Padres' Hunter Renfroe: Crushes again Wednesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Renfroe had himself another big day Wednesday against the Dodgers, going 2-for-4 with a homer, four RBI and two runs.

In a season of explosive offensive performances, Renfroe's only the latest in a long line of players who've impressed immediately in the majors. Over just seven games so far, he's ripped four homers and driven home a dozen runs while hitting .421. With a .306 average and 30 long balls on the 24-year-old's Triple-A resume this year, he makes for a big-time keeper and a strong target in next year's drafts. However, Renfroe's relative lack of plate discipline (just 22 walks with 115 strikeouts in 133 games for Triple-A El Paso this year) may result in a hiccup next year as the league adjusts to him.

Padres' Luis Perdomo: Wins final start despite three homers in five innings
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Perdomo (9-10) gave up five runs on seven hits -- including three homers -- and a walk Wednesday, but still recorded a win against the Dodgers.

In a rare occurrence, the Padres' offense mustered enough firepower to overcome Perdomo's ineffectiveness. He ends the 2016 campaign with a 5.71 ERA and 105:46 K:BB with 21 homers allowed in 146.2 innings; those numbers will leave him out of consideration in the vast majority of next year's drafts.

Padres' Jabari Blash: Shut down with finger injury
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Blash (finger) has been shut down, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

The slugger recently began playing in the instructional league but apparently the finger has not responded well to game activity. However, there is some hope that Blash could return to Arizona before long and ramp up in time to play winter ball. Blash could stand to work on his approach and pitch recognition, as evidenced by his 34 strikeouts in 71 at-bats with the Padres this season.
