Padres' Alex Dickerson: Remains out Wednesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Dickerson (back) was held out of workouts for a third straight day Wednesday and will be examined by team doctors, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

What was initially thought to be a fairly minor ailment seems to be sticking around longer than expected, so the young outfielder will head to the trainer's table to see if there's a larger problem presenting itself. Back injuries are always a rough time given how much every baseball activity utilizes the back, but the severity of this particular issue is currently unclear. Once the results of the examination are revealed, a timetable for Dickerson's return to spring training should become clearer.

Padres' Zach Lee: Will compete for roster spot, minors likely
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Lee is one of several arms competing for a rotation spot this spring, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The former first-round pick is looking to revive his career in San Diego after failing to pan out with either the Dodgers or the Mariners. While the competition is wide open for several rotation spots, Lee seems destined for Triple-A El Paso to see if he can re-establish himself as a viable prospect.

Padres' Trevor Cahill: Could make team as either starter or reliever
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cahill will compete for a rotation spot this spring, but the Padres are open to using him as a reliever as well, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

This should come as no surprise considering Cahill's history as a swingman in the past. The soon-to-be 29-year-old has found more success in the majors as a reliever (3.24 ERA) than as a starter (4.14 ERA), but the Padres are so thin in the rotation that they will consider him as a potential option before simply making him a bullpen arm. If Cahill were to enter the season as a starter there would be some deep league intrigue surrounding him when you consider his newfound success -- albeit as a reliever -- and the home ballpark he will be pitching in.

Padres' Paul Clemens: Bullpen a backup plan
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Clemens could still make the Opening Day roster as a reliever if he doesn't earn a rotation spot this spring, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

The Padres look to be taking a "best available" approach to their arms this spring, looking to simply fill roles with the best talent they have at their disposal. Clemens did well as a starter last season (3.67 ERA in 12 starts) and he will start the team's Cactus League opener Saturday, but the bullpen is not out of the question for the 29-year-old.

Padres' Cesar Vargas: Will have to earn spot on roster as starter
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vargas will have to make the roster as a starter, AJ Casavell of MLB.com reports.

Vargas returned from the Mexican Winter League ready to compete for a roster spot this spring. It appears as though the Padres are taking a "starter or bust" approach with the 25-year-old, ruling out the possibility of making the roster as a reliever. Even with the Padres' lack of talent in the starting pitching department, it would be hard to consider Vargas a favorite to win one of the remaining rotation spots. He showed some promise as a reliever as recently as 2015 in the Yankees' organization (2.79 ERA over 67.2 innings with Double-A Trenton), but San Diego seems dead set on making him a starter.
