Mariners' Edwin Diaz: Blows third save against Astros
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Diaz gave up two runs on four hits to blow his third save Monday against Houston.

Diaz was 17-for-19 in save opportunities with a 2.82 ERA in his first 22.1 innings as closer with an eye-popping 32 strikeouts. This marks the first time all season Diaz has allowed more than three hits in an inning, and given his blazing fastball, it's not something we should get accustomed to. Expect Diaz to continue as Seattle's closer throughout the regular season and into the playoffs should the Mariners qualify.

Mariners' Nick Vincent: Picks up third save against Astros
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Vincent worked around a pair of hits to throw a scoreless 11th for the save Monday against Houston.

Vincent received the save opportunity in the 11th after Edwin Diaz blew his third save two innings prior. He owns a 2.43 ERA in 11.1 innings in September and has been one of the hot hands out of the Seattle bullpen, but he won't unseat Diaz as closer at this late point in the season.

Mariners' Robinson Cano: Mashes two homers against Astros
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cano homered twice, both solo shots, and drew two walks in a 3-for-4 game Monday against the Astros.

This marks Cano's fourth multi-homer game of the year, his first since June 9 against Cleveland. The second proved to be the game winner, coming in the 11th inning off Astros reliever Luke Gregerson. Cano was hitting a mediocre .259/.309/.393 in September with three home runs in 22 games heading into Monday night; he'll need to keep coming up clutch for the Mariners to sneak into the playoffs.

Mariners' Hisashi Iwakuma: Allows just one run in no-decision against Astros
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Iwakuma allowed just one run on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts over six innings in a no-decision Monday against Houston.

Iwakuma has been sharp this September, now with four quality starts in five chances and a 22:8 K:BB over 29.1 innings. He appears to have lost his form this season, having allowed a career high 28 home runs in 195.1 innings, but he has managed to give the Mariners chances to win as they try to climb back into the playoff picture in the season's final weeks. The effort lowered Iwakuma's ERA to 3.96; he has yet to allow an ERA of 4.00 or worse in five major league seasons.

Mariners' Nelson Cruz: Back in lineup Monday
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Cruz (wrist) is back in the lineup Monday against the Astros, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports.

Cruz aggravated his sore left wrist during Sunday's game but still managed a pair of home runs before exiting, improving his season-long total to 41. While Cruz acknowledged that he was dealing with pain after the game, he told reporters Sunday night that he expected to be in Monday's lineup. That will, indeed, be the case, as Cruz is slated to serve as the DH and bat cleanup against Houston's Collin McHugh.
